Matthias Gerard Rodgers – Guysborough Intervale
Gerard completed his mission to serve others on July 19, 2018 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Gerard was born on March 3, 1937 at St. Elizabeth’s, North Sydney to the late Martin and Pauline (MacDonald) Rodgers. He attended early schooling in Guysborough Intervale, Guysborough and Mabou, Cape Breton. He graduated “Cum Laude” from St. F. X. in 1956, then completed Holy Heart Seminary and was ordained a priest in 1960. He served various parishes throughout Antigonish Diocese including the Extension Department, St. F.X. and also in Edmonton, Alberta. As well, he completed his M. A. in Economics from Michigan State University (1973). After transitioning from the priesthood, he worked for and retired from Service Canada.
Gerard is survived by three sisters: Marilyn, Truro; Phyliss (Donald) Hart, Guysborough Intervale, Audrey (Frank) Romita, Welland, ON; and five brothers: Angus (Sheila), Brockville, ON; Eddy (Kathleen), Reserve Mines; George (late Beverly), Danny (Mary Theresa), Guysborough Intervale; Allen (Gwyn Mann), Peterborough, ON; and brother-in-law Eugene Smith. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Barbara Smith.
His last years were spent at the old homestead in Guysborough Intervale where he loved doing the simple things; helping and visiting people, cutting wood and fixing old cars.
The family will be forever grateful to Dr. Barb Bell, Karen Hoben, the Continuing Care “girls” Maureen, Carmel, Stephanie & Vonda and the Hospital staff who went “far beyond” to help lessen his suffering. A special thanks to William George, Boylston who was an invaluable support and a close friend during these last difficult months.
Resting in St. Patrick’s Parish Hall, Guysborough Intervale with visitation Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Church, Guysborough Intervale on Monday at 11 a.m.
Family flowers only please. Donations in Gerard’s memory may be given to the Guysborough and Area Food Bank.
Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Green’s Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
