Obituary for Margaret Lillian Carter (Carter)
CARTER, Margaret Lillian (née Carter): Margaret passed away peacefully on December 30, 2017 in Peterborough ON. Born to Henry Thomas Carter and Dora Maud Stover as the third of 5 children in a small house in St. Thomas Ontario on October 25, 1919, she grew up on a dairy farm just outside town. While excelling at school, she helped work the family farm (including roofing the barns) until she graduated with distinction from the U. of Western Ontario with a BA in languages during the war years. She married Fred Carter (no relation) in 1950 and they lived in Toronto and then at Belmont Lake, Ontario. She taught French and German for many years, initially at the Saltfleet High School of Stoney Creek, and then successively at the Runnymede, Bloor, and West Toronto collegiate schools before retiring. She was very dedicated to teaching; she held an abiding pride and interest in the successes of her many students, and completed a MEd from the U. of Toronto. Well-travelled, hard working, and utterly formidable intellectually, she will be fondly remembered as a no-nonsense person of good-natured action who relied on her own unshakable moral compass. She was entirely capable of doing anything that she decided needed doing. She loved to play bridge and liked to bid one more than necessary just to show Fred it could be done. She could drive anything from a tractor to a sports car (occasionally peeling rubber) and she never had a single accident or traffic infraction in her entire life. She delighted in quietly surprising people who were too full of themselves. She and Fred were very generous with food, shelter, time, and support for anyone in need. She greatly enjoyed convivial reunions with family, friends, and fellow teachers until very nearly the end. She will be greatly missed by her husband Fred, her children Charlie, Ron (Ludmela), Margaret, and Les (Eileen), grandchildren Veronica (Brad), Tim (Anja), Emily, Stephanie (Dave), Dylan, and Keegan, and great-grandchildren Aleksandar and Lydia. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Fairhaven Foundation or the Five Counties Children’s Centre, both of Peterborough would be appreciated. Resting at the BRETT FUNERAL CHAPEL, HAVELOCK on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 11:00 am until time of Service at 12:00 pm, Reverend David Estabrooks officiating, with reception to follow. Interment Maple Grove Cemetery in the spring. Online condolences and donations at www.brettfuneralchapels.com
