Lily Safiniuk
(nee Magas)
Peacefully with her family by her side, Lily passed away on December 2, 2018 at the age of 90 years.
Lily was predeceased by her loving husband John; son George; grandson Robert; son-in-law Brian; brothers Alec, Eddie and George and in-laws Hilda and Edward. She is survived by her children Shirley, Linda, Diane (Bryan); grandchildren Kimball (Brenda), Melissa (Rob), Brian, Amanda (Chris), Christopher (Chantel), Jennifer (Billy) and Brianne (Ian), as well as 12 great grandchildren.
Mother was born August 8, 1928, lived and raised her family in the Rossdale and Lockport area. Lily was the eldest of 8, daughter of Alex and Mary Magas. Born in the early depression, mother was raised and lived a farm life. She would find her love and marry John Safiniuk and together continue to farm, raise four children, have a productive farm of stock, dairy and crop. Saturdays, they would sell their wares in Winnipeg, Main Street Farmers Market. Mother raised and took pride of her gardens, canning and freezing the fruits of their labour.
Family and farm would grow, now with grandchildren, together passing on a positive Ukrainian heritage of family and hard work. Dad would pass a year shy of 40 years of marriage. Baba would convert life’s focus on family and working for homecare for years. Baba’s stories, wisdom, morals and values now passed on to include great grandchildren.
Baba would always share a story of her life, her honest opinion, her knowledge and her tradition. And remind you “drive safe, don’t speed and wear your seatbelt” after your visit. Baba cooked great Ukrainian tradition, passed on now to three generations. After retiring with homecare Baba would share her talent selling perogies and holopchi to friends.
Baba would always be a cornerstone of her family, a woman who stood strong and proud as a mother/baba of this family and to each and every one of us.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Bowser, Chris Bowser, Chris Martin, Tyler Lamb, Kimball Lamb and Melissa Lamb. Honorary pallbearer will be Kyla Lamb.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. Interment will follow in the Rossdale Orthodox Cemetery and lunch in the Rossdale Hall.
