In Loving Memory of Klaus
Klaus Friedrich Karl Hempel died peacefully on August 8, 2018, in Toronto, Ontario, following a stubborn fight with cancer. He was 84.
Klaus was born on April 23, 1934 in Berlin, Germany, to his parents, Max and Charlotte Hempel. He immigrated with his family to Montreal, Canada, in 1952. He married Margaret van Essen in 1960, and they moved to Boucherville, Quebec, where they had six children. In 1981, Klaus was transferred and the family moved to Mississauga, Ontario. Klaus started his own business, Hempel Retail Design Corporation, in 1986, and his work took him across Canada and the United States. He even worked as far afield as Dubai and Hong Kong. He enjoyed a reputation for excellence, and his dedication to his work was recognized by his peers when he was awarded a lifetime membership by ARIDO (Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario). Klaus continued working until this year, having never officially “retired.”
Klaus is survived by his wife, Margaret, daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Hempel and Richard Leblanc of Chesterfield, Missouri, son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Marilee Hempel of Oakville, Ontario, son and daughter-in-law, Oliver and Joann Hempel of Montville, New Jersey, son and daughter-in-law Derrick Hempel and Andrea Tavchar of Toronto, Ontario, son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Janine Hempel of Mulhouse, France, and daughter Jennifer Hempel of New York City, New York. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alexander, Sabrina, Ethan, Chloe, Nicholas, Owen, Sophie, and Céline.
Klaus will be laid to rest at Glen Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery in Oakville, Ontario, on August 13, 2018. Visitation will be on the same day from 12 pm to 1 pm and will be followed by a funeral service at 1 pm. There will be a reception following the burial. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Klaus’ life.
