Obituary for
Jean Aylan-Parker
Jean Mary Aylan-Parker (Alexander)
With grace and dignity, Jean went happily to join her family on 22 April 2018. She was eager to be with her husband Major John Aylan-Parker, her father Brig. Gen. Ronald O. Alexander, her mother Mary Alexander (Williams) and her two brothers James and Ronald. She leaves sons Ronald Aylan-Parker (Barbara) of New Zealand, James (Shirley) of Horseshoe Valley and Edward (Pamela) of Caledonia. She was blessed with 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Jean was born in Quebec City on 30 June, 1919. Her grandfather, The Right Reverend Lennox Williams, 6th Anglican Bishop of Quebec, baptised her in Tadoussac, Quebec.
Jean resided in many provinces due to her father’s career in the Armed Forces. Just as WW II began, she married John and went to England for the duration of the war. At the end of the war Jean, John and the three children settled in Ontario.
Jean was blessed with a brilliant mind and a commitment to the betterment of society. Besides volunteering in her church and with Scouts Canada, she decided to learn Braille. Even though she was sighted, she became one of the leading transcribers for the CNIB. Besides books written in English, she also transcribed French, German and mathematics text books. Not stopping there, she began a group called the “Hand Highway” to support people with both a visual and hearing disability. She also précised, on a daily basis, a synopsis of the news garnered from the local newspaper. In recognition of these contributions, Jean was awarded the Arthur Napier Magill Distinguished Service Award in 1983. Jean was also very artistic. She played the piano, sang in the church choir, was very good at sketching and was accomplished in needlework. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, recognition of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Caledonia, The Canadian National Institute for the Blind, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. A visitation will take place on Saturday 12 May 2018, from 12:00 to 2:00 followed immediately by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 27 Orkney St. East, Caledonia, Ontario.
“Rest well thou good and faithful servant.”
