Florence Mary Davies (Smithson)
It is with saddened hearts but with deep gratitude for her life that the Davies family announces the death of their loving matriarch, Florence Mary. She died on Friday, July 20th, 2018 at the North Renfrew Long Term Care Centre in Deep River, Ontario in her 93rd year. Flo is predeceased by her beloved husband John Arthur. In their 66 remarkable years of marriage they shared their love and commitment to each another and to their family. She will be deeply missed by her children Susan (Bentley Jarvis), Chris (Moira Sisson), Cathy (Paul Marcel Leclair), Paul (Alison Ferguson), Jim (Brenda) and Anne (Doug McIntyre), her 15 grandchildren (Anna, Simon, Michael, Erika, Sara, Michelle, Jon Paul, James, Scott, Gillian, Jacob, Matt, Stuart, Desi and Aidan) and 7.5 great grandchildren (Emma, Liam, Jackson, Arya, Adélie, Chloé and Luke). Flo dedicated her life to raising her large family. She had a deep connection to children and they were immediately drawn to her. Flo and John travelled extensively, moved their family to England and twice to Denmark and had friends the world over. People were drawn to Flo’s down-to-earth nature and openness. She was kind, had a great sense of fun, and was known for her spirited, joking manner. Flo’s kitchen was a meeting place where her children and their friends would often spend evenings chatting and visiting.
Flo grew up in Toronto. She lost her father when she was a young girl and left school early to support her mother. Flo worked her way up to become an executive assistant at Colgate Palmolive. Flo met John through their volunteer work with Scouts Canada. She moved with John and her mother to Deep River in 1950. Flo loved books and volunteered for many years at the Deep River Public Library. She also volunteered with the Deep River and District Hospital Auxiliary and with the Catholic Women’s League. We are blessed to have shared so many years with a woman who lived life so fully and gave so much to those around her.
There will be a visitation for Flo on Thursday July 26th from 7 to 9 pm at the Valley Funeral Home, 33337 Trans-Canada Hwy, Deep River. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday July 27 at 11 am at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Deep River. She will be interred beside John in Deep River Community Cemetery.
The family extends their deepest appreciation to Dr. McVey, Dr. Noulty and all the staff at North Renfrew Long Term Care Centre for their wonderful, compassionate care during Flo’s time there. We wish also to acknowledge the friendship of the PSWs from Bayshore Home Health Care.
