Obituary for
Evelyn Jean Wanless (McPhail)
Evelyn Jean Wanless (nee McPhail) passed away peacefully on Saturday August 4th, 2018 at the Glenboro Personal Care Home.
Jean was born on September 3rd, 1920, first child of William and Laura McPhail. Jean will be remembered by her children Donna (Wayne) Hanks of Miami and Robert (Patti) Wanless of Belmont; her grandchildren Ryan (Carla) Desjarlais, Treena (Chris) Doerksen, Kristi (Ryan) Rutherford, Blake (Candace) Wanless, step grandchildren Devin Hanks (Brittany), Justine Hanks (Kurtis), Brenden Hanks (Melissa); her great grandchildren Camryn and Luc Desjarlais, Olivia and Noah Doerksen, Marlie and Bretton Rutherford, Paige, Cierra, and Ryker Wanless and step great grandchildren Kenzley and Zander Hanks. She is also survived by sisters in law Marjorie McPhail of Brandon and Olive Wanless of Wawanesa.
Jean was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ivan, infant children Sandra and Donald and adult daughter Marilyn Black, her siblings John, Roy James, Edith and Beatrice and sisters and brothers in law.
Jean graduated from Brandon Normal School in 1941 and taught until she married Ivan on July 6, 1943. They moved to the Delta District in 1945 and purchased section 36-4-16 where Robert and Blake currently farm. She and Ivan retired from farming and moved to Belmont in 1980.
Jean took training as a nursing aid and was employed at the Ninette Sanitarium and then as a program assistant at Pelican Lake Training Centre. She enjoyed many years working with the great staff and residents at the centre and retired in 1985.
In retirement she enjoyed golfing, shuffleboard, coffee and cards at the drop in centre. Jean was an avid sports enthusiast, loved her Blue Jays, never missed a Friday night Wheat Kings game on the radio and when the curling season arrived she hardly had time to go for coffee between games. She loved her summer home at Strathcona Park where she spent many happy days and nights with her family, her lake family, and many close relatives, playing cards, having “special” coffee on the beach and bonfires at night.
Jean moved to the Glenboro Personal Care Home in 2015 where she met and enjoyed a new group of friends and was cared for by a wonderful staff of caring people.
A private family burial will take place on Friday August 10, 2018 at Hillside Cemetery, Belmont MB.
Friends that so wish, memorial donations can be made in Jean’s memory to the Glenboro Personal Care Home Box 310 Glenboro MB R0K 0X0 or charity of choice.
