Obituary of Emery Reeves
It is with sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Emery St. Clair Reeves, formerly of New Ross, The Forties and Halls Harbour on November 26, 2018 in the Evergreen Home for Special Care at the age of 86. He was born in New Ross on November 14, 1932, to the late Edward Austin (Ott) and Hannah Jane (Hiltz, Corkum) Reeves.
Emery started working at a young age, working various jobs. After dedicating many years with Archibald Farms Ltd., he retired in 1997. He was an avid 45’s and crib player and was sure to let you know if you placed your cards wrong. One of the great joys in his life was his grandchildren and later his great-grandchildren. He always made sure they never left the house without giving them change from his pocket.
In the summers, he would go to many community fairs and exhibitions to watch the ox pulls. He shared his love of oxen with his grandson, who he started taking to pulls at the age of three, and they were inseperable when summertime came. One of Emery’s favorite sayings was “Why ah Wah” and he seemed to say it in many conversations. Even at his retirement party, there was a poem written about him and his favorite saying and the fact that whenever you saw Emery, his hat brim was always turned to the side. You always new it was him when you met him on the road.
He is survived by his daughters Marlene (Andrew) Rogers of Black Rock; Anna (Norm) Schofield of Glenmont; Wanda (Brad) Roy of Halls Harbour; Cindy (Keith) Graves of North Alton; sisters Mardell and Francis of Leville; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Erna; sisters Florence and Rena; brothers Curtis and Harold.
Our family extends our thanks to Evergreen and especially to the many staff of the VON and the Palliative Care Team who made it possible for Dad to stay in his home as long as possible.
Cremation has taken place and, as per Mom and Dad’s wishes, a private family burial will take place at a later date. Memorial donations, in Dad’s memory, may be made to the VON Kings Branch, Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia or charity of one’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Serenity Funeral Home New Ross Funeral Chapel, 4935 Hwy #12, New Ross, B0J 2M0 (902-689-2961).
Miss Me But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little-but not too long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me-but let me go
For this is a journey that we all must take
And each must go alone.
It’s all part of the Master’s plan
A step on the road to home
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me but let me go.
