Elizabeth Hunter McGuire 2018

OBITUARY
Elizabeth Hunter McGuire
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elizabeth Hunter McGuire (nee Lord) on Monday, March 12th after a tenacious battle with cancer.
Born July 2, 1947 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Liz was a devoted and loving daughter, sister and mother who also became a scientist, teacher, dancer, gardener, volunteer, traveler, and joyful singer.
Liz is predeceased by her mother Elizabeth Merle Lord and survived by her father Harold Murray Lord, brothers Rick (Gloria) and Peter (Linda), her sister Alison, and her children Sean, Patrick (Heather), Meghan (Darren), and her grandchildren Rohan, Cormac, Freya, Leeam, and Marlowe.
Liz earned her Bachelor of Science at the University of Manitoba in the 70’s and did lab work before working as a stay-a-home parent. During that time she managed to fit in volunteering, Junior League meetings, sorority get-togethers and Tupperware sales, as was fitting for the early 80’s (along with her mom-perm). Liz excitedly returned to university in her forties to complete a Bachelor of Education and then spent most of her professional career teaching at Ralph Maybank School.
Liz was a woman on the move with countless interests. She shared her love of art through teaching watercolours at the South YMCA. She built and maintained butterfly gardens for her beloved monarchs (and would show you the pictures at the slightest provocation). She went out to the legion hall on Friday nights to dance the foxtrot or cha-cha with anyone that would take a spin with her. She organized season tickets to MTC and dinners beforehand with her close friends, teaching compatriots, and anyone else she could gather. But a special part of her life was making a joyful noise by singing with her sisters in the Women of Note choir. Liz spent days, weeks, months and years at her family’s Granite Lake cabin, most times with her sister Alison, her children and feral, but delightful, grandchildren.
Anyone would know how proud she was of her spectacular children but her true happiness shone when taking her grandchildren to Fort Whyte to go dip-netting or slide on Richardson’s Run or simply to sit, read and hold them close. Wid-woo/Liz/Mum/Mimi was endlessly kind, loving, and patient. Her infectious energy, positivity and generosity will be dearly missed by all those whose lives she touched and welcomed.
A Celebration of Liz’s life will be held Sunday, March 18th at 1:00 pm at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cancer Care Manitoba.
