Doris Adele Travis, late of Bengough, SK passed away on January 16, 2018 at 99 years.
Doris was predeceased by her parents: John and Martha Rosvold; brothers: Ken Rosvold, Les Rosvold; sisters: Lil Lauterbach and Nola Robinson.
Doris is survived by her son Charlie Travis, Weyburn, SK and his children: Michelle Travis, Regina, SK, Nicholas Travis, Weyburn, SK; sisters: Carmel Passmore, Moose Jaw, SK, Claire Johnson, Moose Jaw, SK; brother Gerald (Loretta) Rosvold, Moose Jaw, SK; as well as her nieces and nephews.
Doris was born on a farm on February 5, 1918, in the Una district close to Viceroy. She was the second of eight children born to John and Martha Rosvold. She went to Greenfield School and took highschool by correspondence at Una School. After leaving school, she worked at several places. She worked as a housekeeper on a farm in Milestone, as well as a housekeeper and cook in Regina. She then worked at shoe repair store in Moose Jaw as well as a department store as a clerk, where she was promoted to the credit department. Her sister Nola then got her a job at a department store in Vancouver where she got to explore her love of fashion. It didn’t take them very long to find out she had credit experience, and they opened the credit department for that store where she worked as well as took night classes to continue her education. She loved to learn. She then took on the role of managing both credit departments for their company.
She then married and relocated to the United States, where her son Charles was born; and they lived for 10 years before moving back to Moose Jaw in 1969. Doris then took a hairdressing course and after graduating, started Doris’ Beauty Shop in Bengough in August of 1969 at 51 years old. This is where she worked for 16 years, until she retired in December of 1985. She said she had good memories of the years she worked; of the customers who became her friends, and of all the people who made Bengough a good place to live.
Doris had many interests, including needlepoint and playing the piano, crocheting, and she loved to read. When it came time to move to the retirement home, she wouldn’t hear of being any other place but Bengough. It was the only place she felt at home.
A Graveside Service will be held for Doris in the spring for family and close friends.
For family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Doris may be made to the Bengough Health Centre, 400 – 2nd Street W, Bengough, SK, S0C 0K0.
