Obituary for Donalda Grace Pilling
PILLING: It is with great sadness that the family of Donalda Grace (Hinch) Pilling, share the news of her sudden death on Wednesday, December 26, 2018. Donalda, « Donny » was born and raised in the Roseland District, the second child of Bert and Gladys Hinch, on November 26, 1925. She married our father, Harold Pilling, on February 12, 1944. In the 52 years of their marriage, they raised six daughters and three sons: Leslie (John) Steel; Hedy Lynn (Bert) Carter; Larrie; Patricia (Clare) Wheaton; Susan (Garnet Holtzmann); Brent (Sandra); Shelly; Shannon (Harry) Peters; Braden (Jan). Donalda also leaves to mourn her loss, 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Donalda is also survived by her sister, Peggy Johnson, sister-in-law, Betty Hinch, and many extended family members.
Growing up Mum loved to play ball, which drew the attention of our Dad. She also loved to skate, which she continued to do for many years. She made time for gardening, knitting, sewing and baking; and these skills were something she shared with her children, along with her love of books. Mum always wanted to be a nurse; but, except for a short time working at the Brandon Mental Health Centre, her dream was mostly realized with children’s sicknesses and accidents. It could be said that Mum was generous to a fault – never keeping anything for herself if someone else seemed to need it more. She could stretch a dollar to make five. In later years, when there was more time, her passion became researching and writing the history of our pioneer ancestors and war veterans, and enjoying her photo albums.
A Celebration of Donalda’s Life will be held at Brockie Donovan Chapel, 332 – 8th Street, Brandon, MB on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. with a private family interment planned.
