Carole Arline Hemenway 2018

Carole Arline Hemenway
January 11, 1942 – August 8, 2018

HEMENWAY, (McMaster) Carole Arline ~ Carole was released from her struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) on
the 8th of August, 2018. Born at home in Harmony, King’s County, NS on the 11th of January, 1942, Carole was the daughter of Lewis and Hazel (Saunders) McMaster, sister to Rosemary and Verna and brother Jim.
She moved with her family to Kingston in 1953, where she graduated from West Kings District High School. Following her training as a beautician under the guidance of her cousin, Maxine (nee Alders) Geiger, she moved to Vancouver, BC to live with her sister Rosemary and family.
In 1963 she returned to the Annapolis Valley to set up her own Beauty Parlour.
That same year she met a young air force officer, and 55 years later they are still each other’s soulmate.
Carole was a devoted mother to her two sons – Jay (Susan) and Shane (Rene), the more so during Steve’s frequent absences on his air force duties. Throughout her life she contributed greatly to her community: in 1964 she was chosen Miss Kingston, representing the village in the Apple Blossom Festival; she was a member of the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for over 20 years, serving more than one term as President; she was a long-term member, including President, of the Kingston District Health Auxiliary.
For over 20 years she spent Wednesday mornings in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, and she coordinated the staffing of the gift shop every September. Like her mother, Carole would rather be in the garden than the house – she especially loved her non-stop begonias, and no weed had a chance!
In later years, golf also got her attention, as did travelling, and most recently, escaping the winter to Carefree Country Club in Winter Haven, Florida.
She was an avid bridge player, playing in several charitable marathons over the course of 40 years.
She was an excellent cook, and took great pride in preserving the

bounty of the vegetable garden. Carole will be sadly and greatly missed by husband Steve, sons Jay and Shane, their wives Susan and Rene, and the grandchildren Alex and Chloe; and Carson, Avery, Caitlyn and Matthew. So many thanks to all those kind friends who helped during her final journey. Most particularly the Neily sisters (Carol Gregory and Doris Glavine); brother Jim and « other sister » Nelly, who provided heroic support to Carole and Steve. And thanks too to Dr. Paul MacLean, the VON and the many health professionals who gave such wonderful, caring support. Whatever religion brings you comfort, Carole would happy that you have that. However, please respect that we are secular humanists. Carol would appreciate donations to the Champs (Child Amputee) Program of the Canadian War Amps, Soldiers Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the Annapolis Valley VON. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448. There will be no visitation or service, rather a joyous, informal celebration of her life (please leave your mourning clothes in the closet) will be held at the Kingston & District Fire Hall 2-4PM Tuesday, August 14, 2018. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
