Bernie was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley, his parents Arthur and Minnie and his brother William. Bernie was born on January 15, 1939 in Quill Lake. He grew up on the family farm six and a half miles north of Clair, SK. Dad attended primary school with his siblings at Park Villa, taking a horse and sled which they built in the winter for transportation, walking when the weather was nice. They curled at Twin Creek, a one sheet rink a few miles from home. The family left the farm in 1955 and moved to Quill Lake. Dad attended Clair High School for grade nine and took grade 10 through correspondence. He met the love of his life and married Shirley Ekstrom in 1958 in Wadena. They began their life together, raising four children. Dad completed high school and he spent five years taking classes while working full time to become an accountant. He was employed by CN, which lead to the family moving many times over the years. His final position as a Senior Methods Analyst had the family transferred to Montreal for 10 years. But a change was in the wind as Mom and Dad decided the Prairies was where they wanted to be .They eventually settled back in Saskatchewan. Dad retired from the Saskatoon Housing Authority in 2001. Retirement was filled with many projects and hobbies. He spent many days at Mel’s Cafe in Saskatoon helping Mylinda in her restaurant with Mom. Dad loved to work with wood and built many beautiful bird houses and wishing wells over the years. He enjoyed working in the yard and his grass could rival any golf course. Dad also enjoyed gardening and could grow one mean tomato! Garage sales were always great fun, finding the greatest bargain and passing those great finds onto his kids and grandkids. In the winter, hockey was always on the T.V., Toronto Maple Leafs was Dad’s favourite team. But Dads biggest passion was music!!! He played guitar and fiddle. Dad loved to compete in fiddle festivals and play with the Saskatoon Silver Strings! He couldn’t play in his last few years, but he so enjoyed going on Facebook and YouTube to watch the videos his friends would post! Dad said goodbye to Mom on June 22nd when she passed away. They were apart for 46 days and he was lost without her. Our parents are together again and they requested a joint memorial service held in their honour. Family and friends are invited to celebrate the lives of Bernie and Shirley. A Memorial Service celebrating the lives of Bernie and Shirley will be held on Friday August, 17 at 1:00pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th St., first right past Briargate Rd.). The family would like to thank Dr. Rebalkin, Shelly and Crystal for their care and compassion, The CPAS team for providing excellent homecare, Dr. Sami, Nurse Janice and the team at the Cancer Centre and to St. Paul’s Hospital, for the excellent end of life care Dad received. Memorial donations may be given to St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation (1702 20th St. W, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0Z9).
