He leaves to mourn his wife of 56 years, Jean (Melendy) and his four children; Craig, in Stephenville, Lynda (Lorne) in Stephenville, Lori-Ann (Rick) in Pouch Cove, NL, Jason (Nancy) in Kelowna, BC, five grandchildren, Leah (David) in Ottawa, ON, Luke, in St. Brendan’s, NL, Owen, in Pouch Cove, NL, Elizabeth and Charlotte, in Kelowna, BC. He also leaves to mourn one brother, Calvin in Gambo, sisters-in-law Myrtle, Bertha, Effie, Sophie (Don), brother-in-law Sam (Dorothy), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceased by his parents Hodbur & Maridah Lane of Gambo and step-father Ralph Wyatt of Glovertown, infant granddaughter Erin Maridah, sister Madeline (Watson), brother Munden (Marge), sister-in-law Emily, brother-in-law Eli, sister-in-law Louise (Harold), brother-in-law Ralph (Olive), brothers-in-law Joe, Fred, and Robert. Austin was born in Gambo on November 17, 1940. He moved to Stephenville with his family in 1970 where he taught at the College of the North Atlantic (District Vocational School) until his retirement in 1996. Austin loved to sing and for many years sang with the Stephenville Glee Club and other musical groups in the Bay St. George area. He especially enjoyed his many years with his good friends and fellow grandfathers in the group “The Poppas”. His joy of singing extended to long trips across the island. The family would leave Stephenville on vacation and he would start singing as soon as they left Hillview Avenue and he did not stop until they arrived in St. John’s. And he never sang the same song twice. He also enjoyed trivia, storytelling, and was known for his wealth of knowledge of Newfoundland and its history. In his 48 years in Stephenville, he was an active community volunteer in many sports and activities, especially when his children were younger. Following his retirement, he was an active board member of the Stephenville Theatre Festival for over ten years. But at the end of the day Austin’s real joy was time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He kept in touch with everyone regularly, no matter where in the world they were, and stayed very close to his family in Gambo. Special thanks to the many wonderful and special health care providers and workers at both the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville and the Bay St. George Long Term Care Facility in Stephenville Crossing. Visitation will take place on Sunday, December 2 at Russell’s Funeral Home in Stephenville from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A service will take place on Monday, December 3 at 2 p.m. at Russell’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will take place at a later date in his hometown of Gambo. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or the charity of one’s choice.
“Then as my sun begins to set, I too can say without regret, my footprints sunken in the sand, can be a path for any man.”
