Arthur Larry Johnston 2018

Obituary Overview
Forever in our Hearts
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Arthur Larry Johnston at the Rockyview General Hospital on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the age of 80 years.
Larry will be lovingly remembered by his son Dwayne of Fox Creek, AB; his daughters Dalene (Graham) Friesen of Airdrie, AB and Darla (Tracy) Elmore of Dallas, Texas; and his four grandchildren: Hunter and Carson Friesen, and Trey (Lindsay) and Kaitlyn Elmore. He will also be missed by his sisters: Barbara Helland and Nola Tanasiuk; sisters-in-law: Beth Johnston, Dawna Liske, Beverly (Danny) Hommy and Judy Laurence; brothers-in-law Abe Landers, Ralph Ament Jr. and Rick Ament (Becky) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many treasured friends. Larry is predeceased by his wife Fay Johnston; his father and mother Arthur and Alice Johnston; father-in-law Ralph Ament Sr.; mother-in-law Ida Ament; brother Cal Johnston; sister Marilyn Landers; brothers-in-law Eli Tanasiuk and Don Liske; and nephews Carey Landers and Dean Denschikoff.
Larry was born in a log cabin near Heart Valley, Alberta in Peace River Country to Arthur and Alice Johnston. The family moved to Mayerthorpe, Alberta in 1946. Larry married his high school sweetheart, Fay Ament, in 1959 and they lived in Whitecourt, AB. Larry attended SAIT and NAIT and achieved his journeyman heavy duty mechanic ticket. While in Whitecourt, Larry and Fay started their family with the addition of Dwayne and Dalene. After moving to Calgary, Darla joined the family. Larry worked at GSL Chev City then moved over to the City of Calgary where he spent most of his career at Calgary Transit. Larry retired from the City in 1999 and worked part time at Woodridge Ford.
Family was the most important part of Larry’s life. He loved being a husband, Dad, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed it – whether it be fixing one of his kids’ old beater cars, looking after his grandchildren, driving friends to appointments or just being there when someone needed a friend. He cared selflessly for Fay during her illness. He always put others first, never wanting the attention on himself. Larry loved to tease, loved to laugh and loved to be around family and friends. He was famous for his pumpkin pies, fried chicken and veal cutlets!
Larry’s strong will and love of his family gave him strength through many health challenges. He was much loved and greatly respected and will be missed by all who’s lives he touched.
Larry was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and received his lifetime membership pin on his 80th birthday. He was also a member of the Shriners, Scottish Rite and Eastern Star.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Dr. Roode and the staff in Rockyview General Hospital’s Unit 72 – and in particular, Laura, who took such a special interest in Larry and his family. Larry became a popular resident at Luxstone Manor in Airdrie, AB two years before his passing and the family sincerely appreciates the friendships he made and care he received there.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Larry may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home, Prairie View Chapel (1605 – 100 Street SE, Calgary) at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2018.
