Alice M. Power – Gulf Shore, September 1, 1951…….April 6, 2018
Alice passed away peacefully on April 6th. at North Cumberland Community Health Center. A warm thank you to Dr. Blaikie and the staff at the centre for their care and support. She was born in Conche, Newfoundland to the late Richard and Mary Jo (O’Neill) Joy. Alice will be sadly missed by her husband Michael, Pugwash; sisters Shirley ( Bob),Toronto; Theresa (Carl) Alba and brothers Bill, Elliot Lake; Albert (Delores), Edmonton; Frank, Edmonton and Gerard, Conche; plus several neices, nephews, great-neices and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Cyril, Cambridge, Ont. Alice graduated from Memorial University, St. John’s NL with a Bachelor of Education and Physical Education and began her teaching career in Stephenville, NL. She taught in Bloodvein, Manitoba for several years. However most of her teaching career took her to various communities throughout. the Northwest Territories. She also worked in corrections at the Stephenville Correctional Center for women. Alice was always considered an exceptional teacher and principal by her fellow teachers and students. Alice and Mike retired to Pugwash in 1996 where she began working as a greens keeper at Northumberland Links G.C, a job she truly enjoyed. It allowed her to get out in the fresh air and exercise at 5 in the morning, and, when the greens were finished at 10 AM, she still had a full day to enjoy some of her other activities. Finally, in 2015, Alice felt it was time to park the lawn mower and do some travelling. She and Mike purchased a pop-up camper and took a camping and hiking trek across Canada. The following year it was camping and hiking in their native Newfoundland, visiting many of the bays and inlets they were not able to get to in their younger years. Community service and volunteerism were a prominant part of Alice’s life. She was a founding member of Friends of the Pugwash Estuary. She led this organization to become a registered charity and to acquire Estuary House and property on Docherty Creek. She was adamant that this property have public access so anyone could enjoy contact with the environment. The house and hiking trails are a tribute to her hard work and dedication. Alice loved her walks. In the woods, on the shore or even along the road. She loved a challenge and over the years the walks became backpacking hikes. She led treks in Newfoundland, the Yukon and many points in between. Her most recent and final hike was last fall in Baxter State Park, Maine. For the less adventuresome, she initiated « Sunday Walks ». She shared her love of hiking and orienteering with anyone wishing to join her and introduced many to the joy and peace to be found outdoors. Alice was a founding member of the Northumberland Community Curling Club and served on the Board during it’s formative years. Her roar of « Hurry, Hurry Hard » struck fear into the heart of many a sweeper. She was an instructor with the « Learn to Curl Program »and co-ordinator of the Sunset Curling group. She chaired the organizing committee for the NCCC Annual Bonspiel making sure that all visitors felt welcome and had a good time….she was also a pretty good curler. Shortly after moving to Pugwash she volunteered to be editor of our community newspaper « The Thinker’s Harvest » as well as a feature writer. Her articles focused on enjoying nature, the successes of students and interesting local history and folklore. In recent years Alice and some of her hikers became members of Pugwash Ground Search and Rescue. Her respect and love for the environment was evident in all projects she became involved in. She has left a lasting legacy. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mundle’s Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.mmcfunerals.com A celebration of Alice’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the: « Alice M. Power Environmental Educational Fund » c/o Friends of the Pugwash Estuary, 2169 Crowley Road, P.O. Box 277, Pugwash, N.S., B0K 1L0
