Lovingly Remembered
MCpl (Ret’d) Abia Julius Amos (AJ) Winters, CD1, 54, of Calgary AB, passed away on November 4, 2018 at the South Health Campus after a brief illness.
AJ (Amos) Winters was born April 3, 1964 in Northwest River, Labrador to Abia and Bertha (Tuglavina) Winters. He attended the Amos Comenius Memorial School in Hopedale before he left to join the military in August 1982. AJ served in the Canadian Army from 1982 until he retired in 2012, with postings in Cornwallis, NS, Borden, ON, Summerside PEI, Goose Bay, NL, Petawawa, ON, Toronto, ON, Halifax NS and Gagetown NB. He also served in two NATO/UN tours in Bosnia.
AJ enjoyed playing volleyball, fishing, camping, playing guitar and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Bertha Winters (Tuglavina), wife, Michelle West, daughters, Denise Wilson, Alicia Winters (David Hansch), Danika Winters, sons, Alexander West-Winters, Christopher Loenhart and Johnathon Dawe (Jennifer Dawe), Ingutak’s (grandchildren), Jax Winters, Chase Hansch, Ethan Hansch, Bella Hansch, Ariella Wilson, Charlie Hansch, Nathan Dawe, sisters Clara Winters, Christine (Winters) Vincent (Clarence), Rosie Winters, father-in-law Stew West, sister-in-law, Roberta (West) Clarke (Rodger), brother-in-law Stewart West (Theresa – nee Byrne), several nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, numerous friends, and finally pets, Moira, his dog and fishing partner, and Angel his cat and nemesis.
AJ was preceded in death by his Atatsiak’s (grandfathers) and Ananaksaq’s (grandmothers) Jobe and Juliana Winters (paternal), Abia and Clara Tuglavina (maternal), father Abia Winters and mother-in-law Gloria West (Flood).
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of AJ (Abia Julius Amos) Winters can be made to the Calgary Health Trust for the South Health Campus, Calgary AB in appreciation for the care and compassion shown by the team in the Intensive Care Unit.
