Zarko Fatovic – December 21, 1930 – March 1, 2017

Obituary for Zarko Fatovic
Zarko passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Agape Hospice on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the age of 86 years after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 21, 1930 in Sestrunj, Croatia. He immigrated to Canada in 1957, where he worked as a carpenter. In 1963, he returned to Croatia where he married Vilma. They both moved to Calgary and started their life together. In the mid 70’s, he designed and built a home in Springbank where he enjoyed beekeeping, gardening, raising livestock and generally living a self-sufficient lifestyle. Zarko had a very strong Catholic faith which led him on a path to volunteer with the prison ministries. For over 30 years, he volunteered many hours at the Calgary Remand Centre, Spy Hill Jail, and the Calgary Young Offender Center, which was very dear to his heart. He also volunteered at the Rockyview Hospital, bringing communion to patients on a weekly basis. Zarko will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 53 years, Vilma; sons, Peter (Helene), Paul (Karen Hicks) and David (Susan); daughters, Linda (Brent Pedersen) and Stella (Rob) Bergen. Dido will be dearly missed by his grandchildren, Amanda, Nathan, Jacob, Emma, Isaac, Samuel, Luke, and Mark; step-granddaughters, Christina(Sam) and Lisa; and step-great grandson Elliott. He will also be dearly missed by his sisters, Rubina Susberic of Croatia and Petra Fatovic; sister-in-law, Blanka Hucman and their families; and numerous other relatives and friends here in Canada and abroad. The family of Zarko would like to thank the staff and doctors that cared for him in the Rockyview Hospital, Carewest Sarcee Rehab, Cochrane Home Care, Foothills Hospital, and the Agape Hospice. Relatives and friends are invited to the Prayers and Tributes at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 – 85 St SW) on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 7:00 pm.
