Service Details
With great sadness we announce the passing of Wendy Deleeuw on December 16, 2017.
Wendy was born December 17, 1949 to parents Frank and Marg Mickey, and she lived and grew up in Ponoka. As a girl, Wendy loved horses, and was active in gymkhana, amateur rodeos and rodeo queen pageants. After living and working in Edmonton as a young woman, she met and married Gordon Deleeuw in 1972 and they began their life together on the family farm east of Ponoka. Wendy was a busy farm wife and got even busier as her children became involved in school and sports. Wendy hardly ever missed a hockey game, ball game, basketball game, school event, or whatever other activity the kids were involved in. As the years went by, her five grand-children became the source of her pride and joy, and she was a frequent fan and supporter of all their activities as well. Wendy enjoyed volunteering at both the Centennial brain injury center and with the Ladies Auxiliary group at the Ponoka General Hospital. Most of all, she treasured spending time with her family and friends.
Wendy was first diagnosed with cancer in 1984, and over the next 30 years, she battled cancer numerous times. She faced every fight with courage and dignity that amazed everyone who knew her. The strength and optimism that she possessed inspired others to face their lives the same way. She never complained, never got down, never gave up, and looked for the best in every situation and every day. Despite being dealt so many challenges, Wendy kept her chin up and continued to smile and laugh and enjoy life; and to be a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother, and friend. Everyone who met her loved Wendy and enjoyed her humor and her spirit.
Wendy was so very loved, and will be missed dearly by her husband Gord; children Brandi (Dustin) Abt, Bo (Jolene) Deleeuw; father Frank Mickey; grand-children Keenan, Ryan, Riley, Colton, and Jenna; mother-in-law Mary Deleeuw, and many brother and sister in laws and nieces and nephews. Wendy also felt blessed to have some very dear lifelong friends who supported her through all life’s challenges. Wendy was predeceased by her sister Jayne, and her mother Marg.
Wendy’s family wish to thank all those who have supported us and helped us through her illness and passing.
In honor of Wendy’s wishes, there will not be a formal public funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to the Cross Cancer institute or the Ponoka Hospital Auxiliary.
