Walter John Finlayson – 2017

Walter John Finlayson
Sydney Mines
It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Walter John Finlayson on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on July 22, 1947, Walter was the son of the late John and Violet (Bonnar) Finlayson. Walter worked at a variety of locations throughout his life such as the Princess Colliery Mine, Sydney Mines, North Sydney Marine Railway and finally at the Cape Breton School Board.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Brenda (Gale) to which his devotion had been best displayed these past several years during her frequent hospitalizations, and his sons Randy (Nancy) Vick (Carolyn), Sandy (Tammy) and grandchildren Devon, Bryden, Jackson, Taylor, Drew and Rebecca. Also surviving are sisters Dorothy (Wilfred) Theriault, and Kay (Vic) Gale, brothers Jack, Alex (Annette), and Russel (Helen), and sister-in-law Anne.
Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his sisters Kay, Johnena, Helen, and Dianne, brothers Danny, Solly, Louis and Murdock, brother-in-law John Lannigan and sister-in-law Anita Finlayson.
Walter was known by all for his quick wit, sense of humor and his ability to make people feel at ease. He lived for his wife, three boys, and many grandchildren. Family was everything to Walter and while he was not an openly affectionate man, his wife, children and grandchildren knew with absolute certainly how much he loved them. Walter was a deeply spiritual man; attending the Bras d’Or prayer group for many years along with his wife, where he donated his musical talents to the music ministry.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michel McKeough and Louise, also the many staff of 4 West Northside General Hospital, who were “second to none” and a special thanks to his loving sister-in-law Lois Gale, whose steadfastness, compassion and loyalty will never be forgotten.
At Walter’s request, there will be no visitation. Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 16, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating. If desired, donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Northside General Hospital.
