Obituary Overview
Walter Domytrak
It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that heaven has gained a new angel Monday, November 20, 2017.
Walter was born December 2, 1941 in Tolstoi, Manitoba. His early life was spent on the family farm before moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba and attending Manitoba Institute of Technology (Red River College) , where he received his millwrights and business administration certificates. It was in Winnipeg that he met his wife of 50 years, Helen Chumak. Soon after their marriage in 1967, they moved west to Edmonton Alberta, where they would start their new life together. In Edmonton, Walter made a name for himself in the Oil industry and along with Helen, raised their family. His entrepreneurial spirit took wind as he started many ventures, with eventually selling D-Valves in 2001 and retiring to allow him more time to enjoy his grandchildren. His pastimes included spending time in the outdoors, if it was hunting, fishing, camping or just going for a Sunday drive. Walter also spent many hours volunteering for various church organization boards and in the kitchen at St. John’s Cultural Centre.
His strength, risk taking and sense of humour were traits that enabled him in business and the Ukrainian community to make life lasting friends. These traits made deep impressions on his many nieces nephews and other extended family. He always had a story to tell which made others feel welcome. He also enjoyed to prepare large feasts for family and friends, always a joyous occasion.
After 49 years of living in Edmonton, Walter and Helen moved to Calgary in the spring of 2017 so that he could spend his days closer to his family which brought much pride and joy.
He is survived by his loving wife Helen (nee Chumak), daughters Irene (Andrew) Demchuk, Larysa (Myron) Gelleta, Tanya (Ben) Gilchrist, grandchildren, Boyan, Lukian, Maksym, Anastasia, Justina, Zorianna, and mother-in-law Jean Chumak. He is also survived by his siblings Alex (Ann) Domytrak, Joan (Richard) Manty, Sonia (Walter) Kamel, Bohdan (Esther) Dmytrak, many nieces, nephews and other extended family. He is predeceased by his parents John and Olga (nee Yarmey) and sister Lesia, brother-in-law Orest Chumak and father-in-law Michael Chumak.
The family would like to thank all who were of great support in Walter’s final weeks. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of their choice.
Funeral services will be held at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 404 Meredith Rd NE, Calgary, Alberta at 1:30 pm Saturday, November 25, 2017. A Graveside Service will be immediately afterwards at Garden of Faith, Eden Brook Memorial Gardens, 24223 Township Rd 242. Immediately following the Graveside Service, relatives and friends are welcome to join with family in the Cultural Centre of St. Stephen’s Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church, 4903 – 45 St SW, Calgary Alberta for a time of refreshments and remembrance.
