Virginia Holmes, formerly of High River, passed away peacefully at her home in Calgary at age 81. Born in High River on Oct. 24, 1935, she was the daughter of the late William and Marie Holmes.
She is dearly missed by her sisters Pat Phillips, Edmonton; Barbara Kwasny, Calgary; and brother Bill (Dorothy), High River. Also by many nephews and nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews, and long-time friends.
She took her elementary and high school education in High River and worked after… hours manning the soda fountain at Marshall Drugs and Laycrafts Drugs. She graduated from Henderson Business College in Calgary. She worked in Calgary corporate offices before moving to Hawaii for seven years working for the C. Brewer & Co. She also worked in San Francisco before returning to Calgary to work in law offices and for oil companies.
For many years Virginia was a volunteer for the Canadian National institute for the Blind working in the gift shop at Holy Cross Hospital. She also served meals for homeless people and families in need through a Calgary church group. As a member of the Southern Alberta Oldtimers Association, she worked yearly at the Stampede helping to prepare and serve food at the Rotary House teas. She was a great supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Society of Calgary and, over many years, worked at bingos, casinos, golf tournaments, and attended chapter meetings in support of C.F.
