Violet MacDowell, 100
Sydney Mines
The family of Violet MacDowell, 100, of Taigh Solas, Northside General Hospital, and a long-time resident of Cottage St., Sydney Mines, announces her passing to be with her Lord on Monday, December 5, 2016.
Born in Sydney Mines on July 3, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Augustine (Gussie) and Matilda Falle. A long-time member of Clyde Ave. Baptist Church, Sydney Mines, and more recently Calvary Baptist Church in North Sydney, Violet was a dedicated mother and grandmother. After the death of her husband Jacob MacDowell, Violet began her second career at the Women’s Wear Dept. of the ‘Cooperative’ in Sydney Mines. This provided her with many stories to share.
Violet was an inspiration to all who knew her, facing and persevering through many challenges, dependent on her deep faith, and with an undeniably strong and resilient personality. She was truly one of a kind.
Violet is survived by her son Lorne (Janet), St. Georges Channel, and her beloved grandchildren; Kenzie Jones (Andrew), Moncton, Carly MacDowell, Halifax, Kent Wolstenholme, Halifax, and Ryan Wolstenholme, Porter’s Lake. She is also survived by her granddaughter Lisa Richardson (Spencer Dellapinna), Truro, with whom she shared a special relationship, and her son-in-law Scott Wolstenholme. Violet was extremely pleased in the last year of her long and extraordinary life to have and to meet her great-grandsons Hunter Dellapinna and Jacob (Jake) Jones.
Besides her parents, Violet was predeceased by her daughters Beverly Richardson (Blair), Anita MacDowell, and Marilyn Wolstenholme. They were, as Violet would say, extraordinary women. She was also predeceased by her brother Eddie Falle.
To those at Taigh Solas, thank you for your care over the last three years. A special thank you also to Dr. Paul Hickey.
Visitation for Violet MacDowell will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 6-9 p.m. in J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. A celebration of her life will take place on Friday, at 11:00 in Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, with Rev. John Hannen officiating. The burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. Donations in Violet’s memory may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, Port Hawkesbury United Baptist Church, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
