Obituary of Vicki McLaughlin
SHARON VICTORIA McLAUGHLIN (NEE CLUFF)
September 29, 1940 – November 24, 2017
Passed away peacefully at Bridgepoint Healthcare in Toronto on Friday, November 24, 2017.
Vicki will be missed by her loving children, Meagan, Alfie & Courtney, daughter-in-law Janine, son-in-laws Michael & Jeff, sisters Jackie & Judi, brother Robert and her two dearest cousins, Steve & Cal. Vicki will also be greatly missed by her nine grandchildren, Maddy, Camryn, Fletcher, Charlotte, Gabrielle, Liam, Oliver, Sacha & Thea as well as her numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vicki was born in Bayfield Ontario, on September 29th, 1940 to the late Jack Cluff and Helen Cluff (nee Scotchmer). She grew up on her family farm in Huron County surrounded by a large, loving, extended family of aunts, uncles & cousins. Growing up she was a notable student and athlete, earning recognition in various sporting competitions. She was elected “Athlete of the Year” in 1958, her senior year of high school. She attended Western University and later became a teacher. She began her teaching career, in a one room school house, SS #10, in Huron County, teaching grades one through eight, she was one year older than her most senior student, Vicki later moved to London, Ontario, to accept, with great enthusiasm and ease, a more relaxed offer to teach a straight Grade One class.
While in London, Vicki met Fletcher McLaughlin, an MBA student at Western University, they were married in 1964. Vicki went on to teach at Ryerson Public School in Toronto and in 1967 the couple spent a year in Manhattan. While Fletcher advanced his banking career, Vicki enjoyed her first taste of cosmopolitan life. It was here she began her interest in art & fashion, and enrolled in dress designing courses.
Toronto would eventually become home for Vicki and her family, where she would raise her three children, build long lasting friendships and develop a career at Glendon College, York University.
Vicki never lost her Huron County roots and her deep commitment to family values. She spent many summers and weekends in Bayfield nurturing the relationships she built with her children & grandchildren. She would often be seen strolling Bayfield Main Street with her golden doodle Daisy, hot coffee in hand, looking stylish and graceful as ever. Vicki will be remembered for her outstanding summer dinner parties, her love of reading, her generosity of spirit, her grace and dignity (and of course her fiery red hair.)
The family would like to thank the staff at North York General Hospital & Bridgepoint Active Healthcare for their incredible support and care. A special thank you to the many friends and family who took out the time to visit her during those last few weeks and to Dr. Jeff Myers in the Palliative Care Unit at Bridgepoint for his support and compassion.
The family will receive friends and family at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, 141 St. George St., Toronto, on Friday December 15th from 2 – 5 p.m. Interment will follow in in the summer of 2018 in Bayfield, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Bridgepoint Active Healthcare Palliative Unit or The Bayfield Public Library in Bayfield Ontario.
