Vera
Annie
Halifax, NS (Formerly) of Corner
Brook)
December 8, 1930 – June 7,
2017
The Power family would like to
share the heartbreaking news of the death of their mother,
Vera
AnniePower
(Penney) on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at the Halifax Infirmary,
NS at the age of 86.
She is predeceased by her parents: George and Hettie;
her husband: Basil and two of her sisters, Mildred and
Janette.
She leaves to mourn her
remaining siblings: Ella, Hazel, Joyce, George (Rose), Winnie (Barry)
and Betty (Robert) ; her children : Richard,
Stephen (Joy), Dennis, Judy, Marie
(Jamie Simpson); her grandchildren : Michael (Krissy Snooks), Sean
(Joani), her great-grandchildren :
Melissa,
Cody, Breanna, Jessica, Brittany and Gracie; as well
as many nieces and nephews.
Although she lived her last few years in NS, she was
fiercely proud of being a Newfoundlander, and will be happy that,
after cremation in Halifax, Marie and Judy will be bringing her home
to Corner Brook, NL for her funeral, amongst her lifelong friends and
family. Being a true Newf, her last real meal was caplin and cod
tongues, cooked (surprisingly) by her eldest,
Rick.
Born in Carbonear, NL to Hettie (Jennings) and George
Penny, she moved to Corner Brook soon after, where she lived amongst
her many, many friends, and family. Though she was mainly a stay at
home mother, Mom was very active over the years with her friends,
snowshoeing, cross country skiing, aquafit, and more. She always kept
her treasured Coleman stove in the trunk of her car, with tea makings,
for an impromptu road trip.
As her son Dennis says: She lived an exemplary life.
Her proudest accomplishments were her children, and she loved spending
time with them dearly.
She was very popular and loved at her home in Almon
Place, Halifax, playing Skip-Bo, Bingo (winning too frequently) and
arranging afternoon teas, and we will plan a celebration of her life
for her dear friends there at a later
date.
