Thelma Penner
August 15, 1929 – May 31, 2017
On May 31, 2017, with family by her side, Thelma Myrtle Penner (nee Sholdice) passed away at the Sherwood Home in Virden.
Mom was born on August 15, 1929, at Dauphin General Hospital, and spent her early years on the farm at Ashville. The family moved to Dauphin in 1936 where Mom graduated from high school. Immediately after public schooling, Mom enrolled in nurses training and graduated, with her twin sister, Theda, at Dauphin General Hospital in the 1951 Class of Registered Nurses.
It was at Dauphin General Hospital where on December 17, 1952, Mom met the love of her life, Cornie, as he fell from the sky in a plane crash in the Duck Mountains, was rushed to Dauphin Hospital, and entered the care of his nurse, Mom.
Following a lengthy recovery for Dad, he and Mom were married at the Sholdice family home at 909 Main Street, Dauphin, on May 22, 1954. The happy couple settled at Virden where Dad ran his carpentry business and Mom began nursing at Virden Hospital.
Mom and Dad worked hard at building, nursing, and farming as the family grew to include Heather, Tim, and Rob. Together, we resided at the farm site to the west of Oak Lake where Mom had a large garden, time to watch the wildlife that passed through the yard, and a well stocked kitchen.
Mom continued nursing at Virden and retired in 1988. At that time, Mom, a nurse that loved the maternity ward best of all, could no longer count the babies she had helped to deliver as the number was in the many hundreds.
Mom and Dad lived on the farm until taking up residence at the Sherwood Home in Virden in the summer of 2016. While still on the farm, Mom and Dad were always eager to host visitors for a meal. That hospitality carried on at the Sherwood as Mom continued to try to make sure that all who visited were also fed, and was a testament to Mom’s simple, yet all encompassing, bedrock faith that “whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16) and “faith, if it doesn’t have works, is dead” (James 2:17).
Mom was predeceased by her sisters Roberta (Bob) Berry, Theda (Vern) McNaughton, and Vivian. Left to celebrate Mom’s life is her husband of 63 years, Cornelius; daughter, Heather (Glenn) Galloway; and sons, Tim (Karyn) and Rob (Joanne); 7 grandchildren (Scott, Carson, Kayliegh, Tallia, Lindsay, Luke, and Jackson); sister Shirley (Fred) Hall; sisters-in-law Beth (Bill) Kathler and Iola (Henry) Penner; numerous nieces and nephews; and too many friends and co-workers to count.
Funeral services will be held from Oak Lake Mennonite Church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8th with Dan Sawatsky officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Lake Cemetery.
If friends so desire, donations may be made to Oak Lake Cemetery or the charity of your choice in memory of Thelma.
