1928 – 2017
Obituary for Sydney Clarence Butler
Sydney Butler
(December 13, 1928 – November 19, 2017)
Syd Butler passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the age of 88.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lori, his sons Gerald (Theressa) and Kelvin, and their mother Joan, and his granddaughter Cassandra. He is also survived by his siblings Marina, Brenwyn, and Pierce, his brothers- and sisters-in-law Bonnie and Larry Rigaux and Jan, Gord and Doug Griffin, and numerous nieces and nephews. Syd was predeceased by his parents, Hans and Selina Butler, sisters Agnes and Eva, and brothers Dick, Jack, Art, Bill and Charlie.
Syd was born and raised in Birtle, Manitoba, and moved to Winnipeg in 1954 to complete his training as an electrician. He started his career at Elmwood Electric. In 1956 he became an electrician at The Winnipeg Municipal Hospitals (now Riverview Health Centre) where he remained until his retirement in 1991. Syd became busier in his retirement than he ever was at the hospital, doing handyman work for anyone who asked. His one business card read “no job too small…some too big!”
Syd took great pride in building things, from small projects like trophies, signs and miniature lighthouses to major projects. He built his homes in Charleswood and Dugald, and together with Lori completely renovated their cottage at West Hawk Lake.
Syd was an avid curler, serving as President of both Charleswood and Springfield curling clubs, and was a founding skip of the On the Rocks Curling League at Fort Rouge. After his retirement he curled in as many as five leagues a week. Over the years he also bowled, golfed, played slow pitch and umpired into his seventies. He loved boating and water skiing, even though he could not swim.
Syd liked nothing better than spending time at West Hawk, surrounded by family and friends, playing cards, doing the latest project, or just sitting on the deck with a rum watching his dogs Boomer and Scruffy chase squirrels. He always had a “good” old joke to tell or a tale of some adventure from his youth.
A celebration of Syd’s life will take place in the new year. In lieu of flowers, if you so desire, the family asks that you consider a donation to The Winnipeg Humane Society or to Habitat for Humanity Women Build.
