Mathematics professor and avid gardener, Surinder Sarwal passed away suddenly on September 7, 2017. The son of Shiri Ram and Annapurna Sarwal, Surinder was born in Patiala, India in 1936. As a young man, he emigrated to Boston. He moved to Halifax in 1965 where he taught applied mathematics to generations of engineers at the Technical University of Nova Scotia. He recently received an honourary Engineers Canada Fellowship. He was well known in his Armdale neighbourhood for his abundant garden, especially his roses, where he experimented in creating new species.
