Sheila Moyra Stewart passed away peacefully at the age of 91 at the Victoria General Hospital in Victoria, B.C., on Feb. 8, 2017 after a brief illness.
Sheila was born to George and Mabel Mackintosh on May 31, 1925 in Edmonton where she took her early education. She lost her mother at an early age. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta and worked at the Alberta Research Council, where she earned money to finance a lengthy trip to Europe with a group of lifelong women friends known as the “Unclaimed Treasures.” She was not “unclaimed” for long, however, and upon her return married a handsome war veteran, a lawyer named Neil Stewart.
For the next 64 years until Neil’s passing last April, Sheila and Neil were inseparable. They enjoyed a tremendously fulfilling life built around their love of family, reading, fine music, travel, Scottish roots and dogs. Both Sheila and Neil were avid hikers, enjoying walking and cycling tours in Britain and France.
Sheila was known for her warm personality, loyalty to family and friends, her continuous and abiding curiosity and her natural ability to put people totally at ease, even those she had just met.
Sheila is survived by sons Ian (Judy Piercey) of Edmonton and Sandy (Darlene Leavitt) and grandsons Callum and Andrew of North Saanich, B.C., and brother George Mackintosh of Edmonton. In addition to husband Neil, she is predeceased by son George Neil.
Sheila will be greatly missed by family and friends in Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa.
As per Sheila’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the SPCA or charity of your choice.
