On April 28, 2017 our father Stanley Earl passed away peacefully at Northwood Center, Halifax aged 95 years. Of Polish heritage he was the youngest son of Ladislas Sieniewicz and Louise (Struzinski). The last surviving member of a large family he was predeceased by brothers, Thaddius, Edward, Eugene, Stanley (1), Julius, Harry, Raymond, Bernard and Arthur and sisters, Helen, Jenny, Irene and Florence. He possessed a unique yet funny personality, never losing his sense of humour, combined with a truly remarkable talent for building and repairing anything. Born February 20, 1922, he was raised and schooled in Halifax joining the Merchant Marine in 1941 but shortly thereafter enlisted in the R.C.A.F. He served out WWII as a radio operator/technician stationed in Yorkshire, England. He met his first wife Mary “Molly” Batley (deceased) during this time. They returned to Halifax after the war. Additional electronics training pushed him to a career in this field, leading them across the ocean to England once again where he was employed by Leeds University Hospital. Stanley was passionate about his work, being instrumental in the construction of the first operational heart bypass pump in the U.K. This passion followed him to his hobbies deriving great pleasure as a a HAM Radio operator, a motorcycle fanatic, an exceptional model maker, model railway enthusiast and fly fisherman. Stan and “Molly” had two children, Allan (Heather), Shubenacadie and Sheila (Dwayne Patmore), Chilliwack, B.C., grandchildren, Angela, Michael (deceased), Matthew, Emilee, Shane and Christine. He was blessed with numerous great-grandchildren. Relocating again to Halifax in 1960 he was employed with Dalhousie University until his retirement. “Dido” as he affectionately known by his family met the second love of his life Denise Poirier while working for Dalhousie. They were kindred spirits, best friends with a true love of life, nature, animals and each other. Shortly after their marriage they moved to the “farm” in Lower Cornwal, Lunenburg Co. to enjoy their retirement years together. “Dido” gained a new family after his marriage to Denise including her son, Lenny (Lynne), Hubbards; Dolores (deceased); Paul (Rain), Fort St. John B.C.; Maurice, Halifax; and Lena, Middle Sackville; grandchildren, Mark, Kelly, Mitchell, Melissa, Nicole, Abbey, Katie, Nicholas and a total of eight great –grandchildren. Denise passed away on March 19, 2017 and “Dido” followed quickly not wanting to be without her. He made many friends during his lifetime all of whom were enriched by knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, kindness, wisdom, memories and so much laughter. He was truly a life well lived. He will be missed. The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers, the staff at Parkland retirement living, Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building and Northwood Center for their dedication and support. A special thanks to Lenny and Lynne for all their work on behalf of, and care given to “Dido” over the years. It was both exceptional and unprecedented.
A celebration of “Dido’s” life will be held on Saturday, August 12, in the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Home, 13549 Peggy’s Cove Road, Upper Tantallon; a follow up notice will announce the time and details of the service. Condolences can be left at www.rawalker.ca. No flowers please.
