SLYFIELD Evelyn Pearl (nee Branton) – 2017

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Evelyn Pearl Slyfield on Saturday May 6th in her 105th year. Evelyn was born in Oshawa on June 27th, 1911, the eldest child of Franklin and Mary (Root) Branton and lived her entire life in Oshawa except for a few years during the early 1930’s when she lived and worked in Kingston. Married in 1935, she was predeceased in 1950 at the age of 39 by her husband, Arthur Slyfield, an Oshawa teacher and librarian at OCVI. Predeceased also by her brother Orville Branton (1988) and sister Muriel Cook (2004). She is survived by her sons Philip of Ottawa and James (Sylvia) of Clarington and her daughter Marilyn Moulton (Gordon) of Whitby. Genealogical research has established that Evelyn was the longest-living Branton in her family line. After Arthur’s death, Evelyn undertook employment as a medical secretary, first for two Oshawa doctors and later at the then Oshawa General Hospital, reluctantly retiring in December 1976. During those years Evelyn was very active in the Home and School Association, the Boy Scouts Mothers’ Auxiliary, the Medical Secretaries Association and her church group. Following retirement she became even more active in her church (St. Andrews United, Oshawa) as well as the Durham Chapter of the Canadian Club. Born shortly after the Wright brothers’ first flight, her first flight as a young woman was in an open-cockpit bi-plane. Later in life she travelled by jet air to Australia, Hawaii, France and Florida. She crossed Canada by rail on the “Canadian” from Vancouver to Toronto. Although she did not obtain a drivers license or own a car until age 56, she kept driving until age 93, never having to surrender her license. Evelyn maintained the family home, purchased in 1945 by her and Arthur, until 2013 when she moved to Traditions of Durham Retirement Residence in Oshawa. Throughout her life she was fortunate to have made many friends, most of whom she had outlived. She will be remembered by most for her determination and compassion, and especially by her family for the love she always conveyed and the personal sacrifices she made to maintain the family home and to help support her three children through their post-secondary education. Evelyn was a voracious reader and always interested in current events. She loved to garden and for many years was famous for being out working in her garden until well after dark. Evelyn was the much loved and very actively involved Grandma/Gran to Christopher Slyfield (Karen-Ann Virtue), Whitby; Adrienne Salo nee Slyfield (Russell), Ottawa; Jordy Moulton (Cathy), Brampton; Kiley Moulton (Lisa), Sturgeon Falls; Keir Moulton (Michael Brigham), Vancouver; Kat Slyfield (Zachary Anaya), Barrie. She was also the proud and beloved great grandmother of Richard and Jessica Salo and Caelia, Grace, Clara, Lilah, Addy and Beatrice Moulton. Evelyn’s family wishes to recognize and thank all the staff of Traditions Retirement Residence and the nurses, PSW’s and caseworkers from CCAC for their care, compassion and respect for our Mother, and Dr. Osborne, a true advocate for the elderly. A warm thank you as well to all the residents of Traditions – many of them old Oshawa friends and others new and valued friends – for their love, support and many kindnesses. Relatives and friends may call at MCINTOSH-ANDERSON-KELLAM FUNERAL HOME, 152 King Street East, Oshawa (905-433-5558) on Sunday May 28, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday May 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with reception to follow. Interment at Oshawa Union Cemetery, beside her husband, post reception. Donations made in memory of Evelyn to charity of choice would be appreciated by her family. Online condolences may be made at makfuneralhome.com.
