Mr. Sherley Batke of Rosalind passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at the age of 93 years.
Born to Charley and Emma, the youngest of four children, Fred, Lillie and a sister lost to acute pneumonia at the age of four. Sherley was a “surprise” being born 16 years after the birth of Fred.
Sherley stayed on the farm his father homesteaded in the spring of 1903, raising chickens first, then switching over to turkeys until the late 1980s. At age 64, Sherley began working on the construction of the “Double Damn” golf course which opened the first nine holes in 1989, with the back nine coming in 1995.
Sherley was well-known for his sense of community spirit, always willing to do more than his share to help individuals or the community. Whether it was through advice he could offer, wisdom he could share, or through financial contributions, Sherley was always willing to help.
Sherley thoroughly enjoyed his close friends who were treated like family, and the community he loved so much. His ever-present smile and the kindness shown to all ages has been greatly appreciated and will be deeply missed.
At Sherley’s request, no formal service will be held.
If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
