Our remarkable father and Poppa, Ron Jones, passed away peacefully at home in Kelowna on December 5 after several months of renal failure. He will be sorely missed by daughters Holly-Anne and Melanie, sons-in-law Dan and John, and grandchildren David, Anna, Cathy and Paul. Ron was born at home during a snowstorm on his grandparents’ homestead near Gwynne, Alberta and attended Wetaskiwin High School. He entered the University of Alberta at age 15 and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering… Read More » in 1949. Most of Ron’s working life was spent in the construction industry in Lethbridge and Calgary, where his company was responsible for building the Lethbridge Post Office, Lethbridge Junior College, Rocky View Hospital, Social Sciences Building at U of C, Winston Churchill and Bishop Grandin High Schools, and the Calgary Board of Education Building. Ron served on the executive of the Calgary Construction Association and Alberta Construction Association, as President of the Alberta Construction Association from 1986-1991, and established and chaired the Gold Seal Committee of the Canadian Construction Association from 1992-1999. He was a proud member of the Calgary West Rotary Club for more than 40 years, serving as President in 1978-79 and leading a group study exchange trip to Germany in 1985. He was a Paul Harris fellow. He was a member of the Glencoe Club, Inglewood Golf Club, the Bar Kay Cee Club, the Y’s Men’s Club of Lethbridge and Junior Achievement. He was especially passionate about the development of Calgary Rotary Challenger Park, an inclusive, barrier-free recreational facility for people regardless of their age or ability.
Ron had a charm, intelligence and wit that made an impact on those who met him, even during his final illness. He brought music and laughter to social gatherings, most notably leading sing-alongs while playing his guitar. He loved hiking, golfing and travelling, especially to warmer climates.
We will remember our Dad/Poppa for his work ethic, his unconditional love, his quick wit, his encyclopedic brain, and for making music such a big part of our family life. From him we learned the value of education and service, to set high standards, and that nothing replaces hard work. Dad/Poppa, your achievements and humility in them will forever be our inspiration.
Ron’s family would like to thank his friends among the residents, staff and volunteers at Sandalwood Retirement Resort for making his 18 months in Kelowna full of fun and laughter. We would also like to thank our friends for their support and love during the last few months.
In lieu of flowers, Ron has asked that friends consider donating to the Salvation Army or Calgary Rotary Challenger Park. A Celebration of Life will be held in Calgary in May.
