Death Notice
VAN HORNE, Ronald George – Peacefully at Mount Hope after a brief illness on Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 with family by his side.
Ronald George Van Horne, beloved husband to his wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Van Horne (Moriarity). Wonderful father to Barb Triantafyllou (Jim), Mary Beth Marcaccio (Jim), Ron Van Horne Jr. (Scott), Linda Dawdy (John), Tim Van Horne (Cindy) and Kris Papadopolous (Miros).
Loving grandfather to Angela (Kevin Hutchinson), Jamie (Lisa), Nick, Curtis, Seth, John (Jaime), Mathew (Julianne), Andrew (Courtney), Patrick (Karyn), Ryan, Keeley, Avery, Jackson, Rachel, Sasha, Jessica, Sydney, Jackie and Kaity. Loving great-grandfather to Shania, Carter, Karleigh, TJ and with another on the way.
Predeceased by his parents Garnet (Jack) Van Horne and Mary Van Horne, and survived by his sister Carol Ross. Born in Goderich in 1932, Dad spent his summers in Clinton and Goderich, alternating between his “green” and “orange” extended family.
His career began in education. He was a teacher and high school principal (Ross, Banting and Clarke Road). He also worked for the Catholic Board as Superintendent of Special Education (1974-77).
Dad’s career was deeply rooted in his passion for public service. He loved his time on the King’s College Board, as well as the Board for Brescia College and St. Joseph’s Health Centre, and adored working with the Sisters. First elected to the Public Utilities Commission in 1970, he was chair of the Board from 1971-1974. In 1977, he was first elected as the MPP for London North and continued to be elected as the MPP for another 3 terms with one of the largest pluralities in the province. His proudest accomplishment was his appointment to the provincial cabinet as Minister without Portfolio – Senior Citizens’ Affairs, where he oversaw the development of the report regarding the future of seniors and long term care in the province.
Dad’s love was his wife and his family, along with time spent on the shores of Lake Huron, both in Grand Bend and Bayfield. His other passion was golf. He served as chair of the Board of Directors for Sunningdale Golf Course, as well as co-chair of the Scatcherd Charity Golf Classic (1985-1997). He was a founding parishioner of St. Pius X – Holy Family Catholic Church in London and loved working with and for people who simply needed a hand up – teaching English to “new Canadians,” president of the ALS Society, coaching, and assisting children with speech and language needs.
Special thanks to his best friend Harvey Gleason for all the love and support shown over the years. Special thanks as well to Dr. Scilley for his patience and passion, as well as the staff at Mount Hope.
Visitation on Monday, November 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James Street at Richmond. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish, 777 Valetta Street on Tuesday, November 14 at 10 am. Parish prayers in the funeral home on Monday, November 13 at 6:30 pm. Private interment at St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mount Hope or a charity of your choice would be appreciated
