ROMANCHUK, Nicholas
February 11, 1941 — December 8, 2017
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Romanchuk of Kelowna, British Columbia on December 8, 2017 at the age of 76 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Nick, the youngest of 6 children, was born on February 11, 1941 in Smoky Lake, Alberta to Harry and Dora Romanchuk.
At a young age, Nick moved with his family to the Langley/Cloverdale area of British Columbia where the family operated a small dairy farm. Nick completed his high school education at Queen Elizabeth Secondary School in Surrey and went on to become an apprentice Airline Maintenance Engineer with Canadian Pacific Airlines before joining the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1963. After completing training in Regina, Nick was posted to Swift Current, Saskatchewan where he met Beverley, the love of his life. They were married in 1966 and had two children, Nick and Laura, while stationed in Morse. Nick served his entire 33-year career with the RCMP in various communities throughout Saskatchewan before retiring in 1996. He was an extremely well respected and popular member of the RCMP. He and Bev fulfilled their lifelong dream when they moved to their newly purchased acreage in Armstrong, British Columbia where they built their retirement home. Nick spent many hours immaculately maintaining their 10 acres, working in his workshop producing master woodworking projects, and traveling with Bev. They enjoyed camping, fishing, visiting family, and watching the Blue Jays. In August 2017 Nick and Bev moved to Kelowna. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and was extremely proud of his family.
Nick is survived by Bev, his loving wife of 51 years as well as his son, Nick (Kris) of Kelowna and daughter, Laura (Bruce) of Regina and his four grandchildren: Sydney, McKenna, Gracie, and Graeme. He is also survived by his brothers John of Lacombe and Tom (Carole) of Kamloops as well as his sister, Olga Byrnes of Kelowna along with brothers- and sisters-in-law Joyce (Don) Maloney, Lois Biederbeck, John (Linda) Sharp, Richard (Heather) Sharp, Lorna (Brian) Cave and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nick was predeceased by his parents Harry and Dora Romanchuk, his father- and mother-in law Jack and Pat Sharp, brothers Steve and Mike Romanchuk, as well as brother-in-law Murray Byrnes and sister-in-law Ruth Romanchuk.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ed Hardy, Dr. Simon Baxter, Dr. David Hoegler, Dr. Mary Wall, and particularly Dr. Samantha Reineking as well as the staff at Kelowna General Hospital, the Vernon and Kelowna cancer clinics, and the Central Okanagan Hospice House for the compassionate and expert care given to Nick.
At Nick’s request, there will be no funeral service; however, there will be a celebration of life in Regina in July of 2018 on a date to be determined. Nick’s ashes will be interred at the RCMP Cemetery at Depot Division in Regina. As an expression of sympathy family and friends may wish to make a memorial donation to the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the Southern Interior at 399 Royal Avenue, Kelowna, BC V1Y 5L1 or www.bccancer.bc.ca .
