Roger Franklin Story – 1929 – 2017

Obituary for Roger Story
Roger Franklin Story died in his 87th year on February 12, 2017 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Roger is survived by wife, Maxine, and his three children, Peggy Story (Dean Fisk), Marcelle Story (Terry Romanow), Roderick Story (April Nakatsu), and grandchildren Jared, Ayla (Nathalie), Mitchell, Ryan and Jake. Also survived by his sister, Joan Tester, and brother, Al Story, and many nieces and nephews.
Born on October 30, 1929 in Owen Sound to Captain Alfred Story (Canadian Steamship Lines) and Marguerite Story (nee Guardhouse) both of Owen Sound.
Roger spent his boyhood years exploring the outdoors, avidly clamouring around the Bruce Trail in the Owen Sound area and surrounds, hiking, climbing and practicing his archery skills. This marked the beginning of his passion for the outdoors.
Always the provider, with a strong work-ethic, Roger was never without employment – he delivered newspapers, did bicycle deliveries for a local bakery (only a few upside down pies!), and meticulously shovelled snow from neighbor’s laneways in the winter months. Later he worked summer jobs for Canada Steamship Lines on lakers, and for Ontario Hydro as a linesman.
As a young man he attended the University of Toronto and in his third year he married his high school sweetheart, Maxine Gordon in 1951. He graduated from the U of T with a degree in Engineering Physics in 1952, then began his career as a hardware engineer with national defence research in 1953 in Ottawa. In 1961 he moved to Northern Electric/Bell Northern Research/Nortel. His initial years at BNR were spent in Ottawa, but later he moved to Atlanta, and then North Carolina. Roger managed many at Nortel, and was highly regarded for his quiet, humble nature, and willingness to share his knowledge with new and up-coming engineers. He retired from Nortel in 1992, but we liked to joke that he failed his retirement, as he continued to return there on a contract basis until he fully retired in 1996.
Although arguably born out of frugality and efficiency, Roger became proficient with his hands – together with his long-suffering bride and friends, they did much of the construction of the family’s first home in Rothwell Heights in Ottawa. He was also known to tackle engine re-builds from cars that would have otherwise been abandoned with the assistance of his son, a strong tree-limb, and some block and tackle. Later, as repairs to the house and yard were required, Roger’s children were conscripted to these tasks, all of whom later developed his passion for gardening, and in particular, keeping roses and other flowers surviving in a climate for which they were really not intended.
Convinced that if one were to live in a northern climate one had better develop a passion for winter, Roger was instrumental in involving all of the family, then later their spouses (to varying degrees of enthusiasm) in downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and skating. Many were blessed with annual ski trips to various south western US ski resorts. An avid outdoorsman the family also enjoyed summer vacations camping, canoe-camping, and tennis.
Roger had a sublime and mischievous side – he was known to apply his knowledge of electrical circuitry to keeping bird feeders in his backyard free of unwelcome guests, providing a shocking experience for the squirrels who dared to frequent the feeders intended for his song-birds.
Roger enjoyed nothing more than to be surrounded by those he loved, good food, good wine, and frequent boisterous discussions that ensued. He had a deep love for his wife and family, matched only for his love of Canada, its rugged landscape, clear waters, snowy hills, and changing seasons. He was in his element when he could combine it all with his family.
Cremation has taken place with a memorial to follow in the summer. Those wishing to express condolences or share memories are welcome to do so at www.hpmcgarry.ca.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of one’s own choosing are encouraged.
