Obituary for Roderick McLeod
Roderick Morrison McLeod, Q.C.
June 1, 1942 – Dec. 12, 2017
Rod died suddenly on Tuesday in Markham-Stouffville Hospital after many years of declining health. Family was very important to Rod. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother. He leaves his loving wife and best friend Mary Anne, his children Andy, Carolyn, and Katie and their partners Shelagh, Andrew, and Ian. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Callum, Graeme, Hayden, Abeti, Mikiyas, Riley and Owen.
Rod achieved many things in his professional life. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce at Queens’ in 1964 and then a Law Degree from the University of Toronto. He was named a Q.C. in 1979. Rod started his law career with the Ontario Government and served as Assistant Deputy Attorney General and Director of Criminal Law, Deputy Solicitor General and Deputy Minister of the Environment. He left for private practice in 1986 joining Miller Thomson. He has sat on numerous boards and has written three legal texts.
Rod lived in Markham, Southampton and Fort Myers. He had many friends in each community and could often be seen at the golf course, the bridge club or the gym. He will be missed by friends at the Saugeen Golf and Country Club, York Downs and Heritage Palms. He was particularly fond of Southampton where he spent every summer of his life.
Rod touched a lot of people and was very quick to help those in need. He supported many charities and was an active member of many organizations.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Markham Stouffville Hospital and all the medical professionals who have helped Rod over the years. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate donations to Markham-Stouffville Hospital or the charity of your choice.
There will be a celebration of life on Tuesday, December 19th at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home at 12pm with doors opening at 11am. A reception will be held at Chapel Ridge immediately following the ceremony.
