Obituary of Robert Whetstone
It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Robert Bradford Whetstone, on Thursday, September 7th, 2017, at the age of 78 years, following a protracted illness. Mr. Whetstone was born in Harriston, Ontario on May 26th, 1939 to Helen and Jack Whetstone. Bob was raised in Owen Sound. Following school, he met and married his wife, Margaret Elisabeth Irene Woods “Margie” in Chatsworth, on June 7th, 1958. Mr. Whetstone worked at and eventually acquired the Rutherford Sign Company where he spent 50 years servicing local and regional outdoor advertising and commercial industries. A pillar of the business community, his impact on the town was significant. In the early 2000’s, he sold his company and entered a retirement of sorts, although he continued to dabble in the sign business well into his seventies. A strong believer in giving back to one’s community, Mr. Whetstone was a lifelong fan and supporter of youth athletics, sponsoring many local lacrosse and hockey teams over the years. A dedicated family man, Bob always said his greatest joy and biggest accomplishment was raising his five children. Bob is survived by his wife of 59 years, Margie; his daughters, Kim Morissette (John), Robyn Follis (Dwayne), Jodi Dawson (John); his sons, Troy Whetstone (Joanna), Shawn Whetstone (Donna); his 10 grandchildren, Erin, Lacey, Becky, Brooke, Rachel, Taylor, Tamara, Alyssa, Rylee, Tyler; his 2 great-grandchildren, Avery and Cameron; his brother, Bill Whetstone (Pat); his 3 half-siblings; his 1 step-brother; his 1 step-sister-in-law and all their families. In addition, Bob leaves behind his beloved pug, Lyla.
In accordance with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service for Bob Whetstone will be held in the Chapel of the BRIAN E. WOOD FUNERAL HOME, 250 – 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K 3X8 (519-376-7492) on Monday, September 11th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Lung Association as an expression of sympathy.
