Reginald “Reg” Grocock
November 10, 1939 – March 5, 2017
Reginald “Reg” Grocock passed away on Sunday, March 5, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was the beloved patriarch of a large family including his loving wife Barbara, his six children and their spouses, and 11 grandchildren. Reg will be greatly missed by friends and family alike.
Born in Nottingham in 1939 to Violet and Bernard Grocock, Reg was one of 13 children. The family struggled during wartime along with the rest of England. As with all British children of that era, Reg was raised with a drive to provide for his family and persevere through the hardest of times. Reg joined the British Army Reserve and served his country in Germany and Northern Ireland.
Reg was a printer by trade and worked for Chromoworks in Nottingham for 23 years. Wanting a better life for his children, Reg moved his family to Calgary in 1975, during a very cold December. Their other choice was Australia, which must have looked better after that first cold winter in Canada. Reg worked in the Alberta oil industry for many years, at Nova Petroleum, Plycoflex and other oil and gas companies.
Reg met his wife Barbara in 1981 in Winnipeg. They bonded over the experience of raising their children, their love of travel and country music. Reg and Barb were married in 1985 in Nottingham, England. The couple needed to reside in England for 30 days before they got married, which gave Barb time to meet most of Reg’s family, including his brother Roy and wife Pauline, with whom Barb became very close. Reg and Barb remain close with Roy and Pauline to this day, spending time together every year, and traveling around the world, to places like Malta, Jamaica, Scotland, Wales, the Mexican Rivera, and Hawaii. They also drove the U.S. Pacific Coast, all the way down to Tijuana. They’ve holidayed in California, Seattle, South Dakota, and made many trips to Great Falls, Montana. They are now all advocates for designated duck crossings in Oregon and better road signs in Malta.
Barb and Reg moved to Ontario in 1986, where they trained to become support workers and worked in Extendicare, helping severely handicapped people. They moved back to Calgary in 1988, where they went to work for the Calgary Association for the Handicapped. Reg and Barb opened their homes to three handicapped men – Colin, Roger, and Tony, who became part of the family.
People were naturally drawn to Reg. He put everyone at ease with his sense of humor and was on a first-name basis with everyone he met. Reg was always ready to make us laugh and to help anyone in need. He will be missed by his wife, Barbara, his brother Roy and sister-in-law Pauline, his children – Deborah and husband Daniel, Darrin and wife Cheryl, Jason and wife Sandi, Adrian, Christina, and Darren; grandchildren Crystal, Christopher, Megan, Inez, Stephen, Emma, Matthew, Sydney, Brenden, Adam, Braxton and Zachary.
A Memorial Service will be held at Choice Memorial (105 – 4715 13th Street N.E.) on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 2:00pm.
