Philip James Ashcroft – 1929-2017

Philip James Ashcroft
1929-2017
Philip (Phil) James Ashcroft crossed his final finish line in
Fredericton, New Brunswick on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 with a time of 87
years, 264 days. Phil was born in Bolton, England in 1929, raised in
Blackpool and trained in Leeds as a physiotherapist, although his real
passion was football (soccer on this side of the ocean). He married
Irene Merry in 1952, and is father to Diane Martinson of Fredericton
and Lynn Douglas of Ottawa.
The family moved to Vancouver in 1958 where Phil took a
physio position at The Workman’s Compensation Board. In 1962
he joined the Canadian Navy as a physio and in true government logic,
was posted across the country to HMCS Cornwallis in Nova Scotia. From
there he was posted to the National Defense Medical Centre. Phil left
the military in 1974 to found the Carleton Sports Medicine Clinic in
Ottawa, with his military compatriot Dr. Don Johnson.
Phil continued to play football until he discovered running
in the mid-70’s. Marathons became his passion and he ran 45
of them before hanging up his shoes.
After retirement, he and Irene moved to Fredericton where
they both took up golf with a passion. He remained in good health
until recently. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene; his 2
daughters, Diane (Dale) and Lynn (Robert); his 4 grand-children,
Cassandra (Matt), Jennifer (Glen), Amie and Kyle (Melissa); his great
grand-son Levi (lovingly referred to by grandpa as Beckham); his
constant four-legged companion, Benji; and special friends Mike and
Karen Rogers.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation
for the wonderful care given to Phil on 4 NW and in the palliative
care unit at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, on the neurological floor
at the Saint John Regional Hospital and, especially, at Hospice
Fredericton.
In accordance with Phil’s wishes there will be no
visitation or funeral service. Friends are asked to celebrate his life
in their own special way. For those who wish, donations in
Phil’s memory can be made to Hospice Fredericton or the
Fredericton SPCA.
