Peter John Dykeman

Peter John Dykeman 26 novembre 1936 – 18 mars 2017

On March 18, 2017, Peter John Dykeman of Orleans, Ontario, at the age of 80. Loving husband to Charlotte English Dykeman, and devoted father to Renée (Jeff McClintock) of Orleans and Mary Jane (Peter MacLauchlan) of Toronto. Peter took great pride in his grandchildren, Justin and Neil McClintock, and Colin and Grace MacLauchlan.
Born in Juniper, N.B., on November 26, 1936, to Hedley and Irene (Matthews), he was one of six siblings and credited his Carleton County roots for much of his success in life. His early years on the farm laid the foundation for his unparalleled work ethic. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1958, and a law degree in 1960. He began his career in the provincial Attorney General’s office but soon moved to Campbellton, N.B., and established a thriving law practice, ultimately Dykeman, Delaney & Hutchinson. A move to Fredericton in 1986 arose when he was named General Counsel for N.B. Power, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. In 2010, he was recognized for 50 years of service by the Law Society of New Brunswick.
Peter was the soul of discretion and embodied all that is good in the practice of law. He also contributed tirelessly and without fanfare to the communities he called home, as a volunteer and through his entrepreneurship as an employer to hundreds.
In the past days, those close to him have spoken of his loving devotion to his wife and girls, his outstanding work ethic, his brilliant mind, his concern for others, and his realization of the importance of physical fitness. He remained an avid runner until very recently, and took up skating again while living in Orleans.
A service celebrating Peter’s life will be held in Orleans at a future date. Donations may be made to Queenswood United Church, Orleans, or the Hugh John Flemming Scholarship that Peter and Charlotte established at the University of New Brunswick, as a tribute to Peter’s early mentor, the premier of New Brunswick (1952-60): http://www.unb.ca/giving/ways/memorials/index.html
