Peter James Stewart (BA, BEd, MEd)
1939-2016
The death of Peter J. Stewart, husband of Bernette E. (nee Groom)
Stewart, of St. George NB and formerly of Pennfield NB occurred at
Bobby’s Hospice, Saint John NB on December 13, 2016. Born in
Campbellton NB on October 27, 1939, he was a son of the late R. D.
“Caldwell” and Kathleen (nee Richardson) Stewart. Peter is
survived by his loving wife, Bernette, one daughter: Kerri Moore of
Pennfield NB; one son: Craig Stewart (Jada Roche) of Lakeville NB; his
grandson: Jude Morton. He is also survived by his sister-in-law: Edith
Stewart and his nieces, Wendy Aucoin, Laurel Stewart Downs, Roxanne
Stewart and their mother Betty Stewart. He will also be remembered by
a number of cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by
one brother Robert “Dugald” Stewart.
Peter was a teacher who began his career at Dalhousie High School.
Most of his teaching career was in the Eastern Charlotte area. He was
the last Vice-Principal of Eastern Charlotte Regional School and the
first Vice-Principal of Fundy High School. He also taught at St.
George Elementary School and he completed his career as a Supervisor
for District 10.
Peter attended Christ Church (Anglican) in Pennfield where he was a
member of the choir for many years. He also served on the vestry of
the church and was a helper on many projects. He had once been an
attendant and driver for the Fundy Hospital Ambulance Service. Peter
was a level 2 firefighter with the Pennfield Fire Department and after
retirement he volunteered in the Emergency Department at the Saint
John Regional Hospital. He also volunteered with the Canadian Cancer
Society in the Cancer Connection Program and was a lifetime member of
the New Brunswick Antique Auto Club.
Arrangements in the care of the St. George Funeral Home (755-3533) 26
Portage Street, St. George NB. Visiting will be held at the Christ
Church (Anglican), Pennfield NB on Friday from 11:00 am until the
beginning of the Memorial Service at Noon. The interment will be held
in the parish cemetery in the spring. Donations to the Canadian Cancer
Society, Bobby’s Hospice or to a charity of the donor’s choice would
be appreciated by the family.
