It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Geoff Pearce at his home in Toronto, Ontario at the age of 57. Most dearly loved by his mother Gwen Dewar, his father Dr. George Pearce (Mary), sister Susan (Rick) Ogilvie, and brothers Keith (Karen), Alan (Nancy), and Bruce (Shawn Silver). Uncle Geoff was cherished by his nine nieces and nephews, their spouses and their six children: Jacqueline Ogilvie (Brendan Garboll) (daughters Audrey and Lyla), Justin Ogilvie (Amberly Winger) (son Parker), Kurtis Ogilvie, Geoffrey Pearce (Athena Root) (daughter Rayna, sons Lincoln and Isaac), Adam (Sylvia) Pearce, Andrew (Julie) Pearce (son Lucas), Katie Pearce, Daniel Pearce and Calum Pearce. He will also be deeply missed by many long-time friends, his neighbours in Toronto’s close-knit Harbord Village where he lived for 32 years, his colleagues from the University of Toronto where he received his Bachelor of Science in 1984 (majoring in geology), and where he has served as managing editor of The Energy Journal since 1992.
Previously, Geoff worked as a journalist for The Northern Miner and as a geologist in Newfoundland, Quebec and Northern Ontario, where he participated in the discovery of one of the world’s largest gold deposits near Red Lake, ON. In his roles as a geologist, journalist and editor, Geoff received awards for his outstanding performance and extraordinary effort. His many talents and interests included a love of music, a passion for experiencing Canada’s wilderness, and a desire to know other cultures and languages. As a youth in Belleville he won first prize in the Rotary Music Festival for his clarinet performance, received the B’nai B’rith Music Award, served as a proud member of the Belleville Yardmen Drum & Bugle Corps alongside his brother Keith, performed with the Air Cadet band, received first prize in Belleville’s centennial essay contest, and graduated from Belleville Collegiate Institute & Vocational School as an Ontario Scholar. His passion for the world around him led him to become a canoeing instructor and counsellor at the Algonquin Experience youth camp operated by the Toronto YMCA, and to participate as a Rotary International Exchange Student in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he learned Portuguese.
Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home in Ancaster where a service was held for family and friends. A Memorial Service in Geoff’s hometown of Belleville will take place on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2017 at 11:00 am at Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel, 30 Moira Street West (613-968-2273, www.steelefuneralhome.ca), with inurnment at Belleville Cemetery followed by a reception at the Steele Family Centre. Memorial Donations to the Toronto non-profit supportive housing organization, Mainstay Housing (www.mainstayhousing.ca), would be greatly appreciated.
