Paul Coughlin passed away on Monday, December 18, 2017 at the age of 82 years. On January 22, 1935 in Toronto, a baby boy was born to Audrey and Emmett Coughlin; their second after their first son, Jimmy. His name was Paul Warren Coughlin. A good Catholic lad, he went to church, played sports and attended school. He was soon recognized as a talented hockey player, receiving a scholarship to De LaSalle School and earning the nickname Cagey Coughlin because of his style of play. Polio ended his hockey dreams, but he recovered and started a life in the oil industry where he met a young lady named Joyce, whom he fancied in part because she was the first person he knew who had a tv. With a coolness that puts modern hipsters to shame, they would head down to the jazz bars in Buffalo after the clubs in Toronto closed and return just in time to start their work day. They soon married and had 2 boys themselves, Wayne and Warren. In 1968, they ventured west to Edmonton where soon another baby, this time a girl named Lindy, came along. Whether it was his commitment to a single employer to whom he dedicated his professional life, to his family that gave purpose to his life or to his enduring friendships that brought joy to his life, he demonstrated a rare loyalty that earned him a reputation as a rock of reliability. He made those around him feel secure that he could always be depended on. After the sad loss of Joyce, his strength of character and good humour attracted the attention of a wonderful woman, Andrea Boddez with whom he once again found love. In 2010, they married and enjoyed years of travel, entertaining, curling, golfing, long walks and great times with great friends. Despite escalating health problems, Paul looked upon his life with pride and contentment. He reflected proudly on his first born, Wayne, raising two amazing boys, Mark and Scott, and who married Cindy, a woman as solid and grounded as himself. He loved spending time with Lindy and his son-in-law/great friend, the exceedingly generous and thoughtful Rob Dawson and beamed with pride at being adoring and adored Poppa to their son Cole. And he enjoyed the times he spent, via phone or visit, with his son Warren, back in Toronto and his wife Nancy, in whom he saw a loyalty like his own. He took delight in hearing or seeing the exploits of their little girl, Aiyana. That little baby boy grew into a good man who live a good life and who ultimately experienced a good death on December 18; one that provided great comfort and even peace to those who loved him.
