Paul Douglas Brophy – 2017

Brophy, Paul Douglas, P.Eng.
June 25, 1951 – July 23, 2017
Loving Partner and Father, Professional Engineer, Polymath
Paul Douglas Brophy died at Freeport Hospital in Kitchener at the age of 66 on Sunday, July 23, 2017 after fighting an aggressive cancer. In his final hours, Paul was surrounded by those who loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Theresa Andary, daughters Megan (partner Albert Tam) and Christine, and sisters Beverley Miller (James Miller) of Oakville and Barbara Bondy (John Bondy) of Belle River.
Paul grew up in Windsor, Ontario. In high school, he met Theresa, his greatest love and chief sparring partner. Paul went on to graduate from the University of Waterloo in 1974 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
The bulk of his career as a Professional Engineer was spent with Linamar Corporation in Guelph, helping grow the company from its early days, leading start-ups, and recovering struggling projects. His colleagues knew him as a trusted manager who got things done, acted with conviction, and made every individual feel their role was essential to the overall project. He was especially proud of his team at Traxle.
Outside of work, Paul was a Renaissance man. He could talk at length about everything from automotive transmissions to Winston Churchill. Paul had an ear for music, and a song for every occasion. A lover of the outdoors and motorcycles, there were few roads in Ontario that he had not driven.
He wore many hats: the mechanic who repaired vehicles, the architect who designed homes, the carpenter who built bookshelves, the electrician who wired his own stereo, the photographer who carefully planned and documented family vacations, and the friend who would drop everything to help. All his work was completed with an engineer’s precision.
More than anything else, Paul loved his family. They will remember him as a brilliant and brave man, who faced life’s challenges with integrity and strength.
Thanks to Paul’s close friend James Calame for his many visits, kind conversation, and unwavering support. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, and care workers of Toronto University Health Network, Grand River Hospital, Freeport Palliative Care Unit, and Waterloo Wellington LHIN.
A celebration of Paul’s life will take place at Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, Ontario on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Waterloo Mechanical Engineering Donation Fund (cards available at the funeral home).
