Ora Van Reet
September 6, 1928 – December 6, 2016
Ora died as a result of complications that developed after a fall. She was 88.
Ora grew up in NDG, Montreal, daughter of Gordon and Vivian Leahy, sister to Jim and Don. While pursing her degree in science at McGill University, she shared a Bunsen Burner with Hector the Director, aka Van, and the flame was lit for life.
Mummy had 4 girls under the age of 5 before her 31st birthday – Sandra Lecce (Don), Martha, Carolyn Wilcox (Bill) and Patricia, all born in different cities including Caracas! Once finally settled in Toronto in the early 60’s, we were surprised and thrilled with the addition of our baby brother, Eric (Michele). Grandsons Ian (Michelle Alexander), Eric, Jacob and Jared will sorely miss her peachy blueberry pies.
Ora excelled in so many ways: a great cook, baker, knitter, quilter, seamstress – we had no store bought clothes as kids! She played tennis, was an avid curler and loved figure skating. She played bridge all of her life, but was willing to lower her standards for the weekly Friday night cribbage game.
Mum had such dignity. She was full of kindness and always put others before herself. She was Hector’s rock – that is for sure. We grieve her loss and will miss her forever.
Private family mass to be held at St. Joseph’s Chapel (St. Michael’s Church) at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, December 10. Reception to follow at the Cobourg Yacht Club, 100 Hibernia Street. Please join us. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to YWCA Camp Tapawingo. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
