Opal Eunice Seifert (Strathmore) - October 16

Opal Eunice Seifert (Strathmore) – October 16, 1932 – July 4, 2017

SEIFERT, Opal Eunice
Opal Eunice Seifert (Keller), b. October 16, 1932, High River Alberta, d. July 4, 2017, Calgary, Alberta.
Opal was predeceased by her parents Everett and Iris Keller, infant son Greg Seifert, and siblings Eileen Young and Gary Keller. Opal will be remembered by her husband Jim, her children; Larry (Kita), Mike (Carolyn), Alanna (Alvin) Hermanson, and Carolynn (Daryn) Knapp, twelve Grandchildren; Calida, Jasmine, Terry, Christianne, Nathan, Brittany, Russell, Kay-Cee,… Greg, Dylan, Brett and Kadon, Two Great-Grandchildren Drake and Veronika, and Opal’s sister Beverly Van Dine.
Opal grew up on the family homestead near Cayley, Alberta with her brother and sisters and a close group of cousins and neighbours that were lifelong friends. Opal rode her horse to and from school in Cayley, and regaled us with tales of going to the swimming hole in the Little Bow, and riding in the foothills west of Cayley.
Mom was an excellent student and excelled at what ever she put her mind to; winning the Boys & Girls Club’s “Dominion Sewing Championship” at the age of 16, which resulted in a train trip to Toronto and the Royal York Hotel. There she was seated between Foster Hewitt and Henry Singer. Getting Foster Hewitt’s autograph was a highlight that Mom often spoke of.
Opal attended Olds College, earning a degree in Home Economics in 1951. She went on to earn her R.N. in 1954 from the Grey Nun’s Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. It was at the Holy Cross that Mom met a patient, James Seifert, who would become Mom’s husband, partner and soul mate for 63 years.
Opal and Jim’s lives were never dull, spending time with friends and family making life long friends wherever they went; whether it was Windsor Park in Calgary, the mixed farming adventure at Olds, or the ‘new’ friends at Nightingale where they have lived for the past 42 years. Mom and Dad were involved in many community endeavours including over 25 years with the Calgary Stampede Promotion Committee. They loved to travel visiting SE Asia, Australia, Panama, Mexico, the US including Alaska and Hawaii, every province and territory in Canada, multiple family trips local and long distance, and recently winters in Mesa, AZ. True to form there were friends made everywhere they went, and their Christmas card list was always growing.
We could write books about all of things that Mom did in her brief 84 years on this earth, but what she did best was to teach and encourage her children and grandchildren to do everything that we could, and to never say no to an opportunity or challenge. Mom was the family historian and link to our nearly 4 centuries on this continent. We are going miss you Mom, but we will never forget you or the things that you taught us.
Funeral services will be held at Snodgrass Funeral Home, High River, AB on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm. Interment service follows at the Cayley Cemetery, Cayley, AB. A Celebration of Opal’s Life will follow at the Cayley IOOF Hall.
