Olive (Simpson) Forbes – 1925-2017

Olive (Simpson) Forbes
1925-2017
On July 7, surrounded by family, our dear mother, Olive
(Simpson) Forbes, passed away peacefully at Frederick Hall, Shannex in
Fredericton. The cruelty of Alzheimer’s had robbed us of our
beloved Mum much earlier.
Born April 2, 1925 in London, England she was the daughter of
the late Jack and Jessie Davis. She was
predeceased by her first husband Robert Simpson in 1970, and by her
second husband C Hedley ‘Bud’ Forbes in 2015; as
well as her sister Vera Halsey and her son-in-law Spencer
Bernard.
Mum enlisted in the ATS (Women’s Branch of the
British Army during WWII) at 17 1/2. Her love for Canada
began when she met her Canadian soldier at a dance. The soldier who
stole her heart was our Dad, Robert ‘Bob’
Simpson. They were married in Dec 1945 and she joined him in
Canada in July 1946. As a War Bride, she left her family and friends
to start a new life in Canada. She never looked
back.
While raising us 4 girls, Mum was involved with Girl Guides
as a Brown Owl, Guider, Camp Commissioner and then a member of the
Trefoil Guild. When we skated with The Fredericton Figure
Skating Club, our Mum served as President. For several
years, she was active in Theater Fredericton and the Fredericton War
Brides Club, serving on various committees in both organizations. She
especially enjoyed working on the War Bride reunions.
With the death of our father, Mum took over running
‘Vet’s’, the family store in Sunshine
Gardens. In her typical ‘take charge, and do it
right’ approach, not only did she succeed at that, she took
business courses at UNB where she earned her Business
Certificate. After selling the business, she went on to work
for ADI, Menzies, and Ross Drug Store where she met her second husband
‘Bud’ Forbes. They married in 1990. Mum and Bud
had almost 25 years together to enjoy travelling the
world.
Mum is survived by her daughters, Linda (Danny)
Grant, Elaine Bernard, Jean (Randford) Gass, Carolyn Kehoe and Allison
(Michael) Brideau; sister, Edna Young (Toronto);
grandchildren, Kelly Grant (Marty Surette), Jeff Grant,
Stacey Coy (Steven Lewis), Mark (Kerstin) Coy, Michael (Meghan) Gass,
Heather Gass (Scott Maston), Jack Kehoe and Alana Kehoe;
great-grandchildren, Jordan, Thomas, Grady, Morgan, Lochlan, Laila,
Duncan, Jessica, Stacy and Danielle; as well as several nieces and
nephews.
We wish to thank the staff of Frederick Hall for their
compassionate care, kindness, and support.
If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be
made to the Alzheimer Society, the Fredericton SPCA or charity of
choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to McAdam’s
Funeral Home.
Please join us for a celebration of Mum’s life on
Tuesday, July 18th from 5 to 8 PM at Kingswood
Lodge, 1700 Kingswood Way, Hanwell, NB.
