It with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nils Laurence Gatto on January 21, 2017 at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre, Blairmore, AB. He was blessed with 87 years of life.
Nils, known affectionately as “Popeye”, was born on March 1, 1929, the youngest brother of the Gatto family. He was always smiling and had a wonderful, positive attitude. In his eyes, the glass was always half full. Nils was a very hard worker who helped others at every opportunity, and he was a valuable assistant to his brothers, Carino and James at Gatto Brothers Construction. His kind, caring nature was evident in all that he did. When Nils needed to get away, he went to his beloved “little red cabin” where he could enjoy some tranquility.
In 2009, Nils moved into the York Creek Lodge, and in 2012 he was transferred to the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre. He faced many serious medical challenges throughout his life, but hope, strength, and the will to persevere and endure saw him through in spite of overwhelming obstacles.
It’s hard to forget someone who gave you so much to remember!
Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life is his niece, Bernie Jenkins and her children, Caitlyn and Christopher, as well as many friends whose lives he touched.
He was predeceased by his father, John in 1957; his mother, Sylvia in 1962; his brothers, Carino, Ferucho, Albert and James; and his sisters, Esther, Irma, Rita and Romelda.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel (13461, 20 Ave., Blairmore, AB) with Rev. Renso Castellarin officiating. Donations in memory of Nils will be gratefully accepted by the Crowsnest Pass SPCA (P. O. Box 725, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0). Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca.
