Obituary for Naomi Roberts
Frances and Jeremy are sad to lose our mother Naomi Roberts (nee Ziman) at the age of 88. Naomi was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and dear friend to many. She will be remembered for her insatiable pursuit of knowledge and curiosity about current affairs, history, art, Russia, world religions and, above all, literature. She will also be remembered by those who knew her best as a strong-willed, courageous survivor. Naomi cherished her memories of growing up in a culturally rich household at 10 Eton Rd (London) with parents H.D. and Jean Ziman and siblings Jonathon and Elizabeth; of the Oxford countryside as an evacuee with her sister during the war years; and of the stimulating university life at St Hilda’s college, Oxford. Graduation and marriage began an interesting and adventurous diplomatic life with husband Peter M. Roberts in challenging postings through the late 50s’s and 60’s in Moscow, Hong Kong, Washington and Brussels. In Washington, she earned her Master’s of Library Science, which allowed her career as Gifts Librarian at Carleton University. Our mum loved the career, the university, the community of Carleton. She made her home and carved out a new life for herself in the Glebe (Ottawa, Canada). Naomi became a published author with “First Foreign Posting”. Astonishingly, following a difficult stroke and heart attack, she fought her way out of managed care back to her flat in the Glebe where she continued to advance her many interests for another ten years. Naomi loved her grandchildren: Jeremy, Derek and Mark Smith; Jane, Jasmine and Jacob Roberts; her son-in-law Bruce Smith, her daughter-in-law Jane Asselin and Jane’s daughter Jamie Bolduc; her long-time friend and caregiver Lily Lepage, Lily’s husband Gerry and their daughter Stephanie and family. She deeply appreciated her many friendships. At Naomi’s request, there will be no formal service but please raise a glass 5pm Friday.
